New Year's Day First North review

Evo-Stik NPL First Division North

The Evo-Stik Northern Premier League's First Division North was hit hard by the weather, losing six of the scheduled New Year`s Day fixtures, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

With overnight leaders Warrington Town's game one of those off, Curzon Ashton took advantage to return to the top of the table after a 2-1 home Tameside derby win over Mossley AFC. Matt Warburton netted both of Curzon's goals in the 27th and 33rd minutes. Dougie Carroll pulled the Lilywhites back into the game with a 54th minute penalty, but the hosts held firm to return to the summit.

Farsley AFC moved into third place after a comfortable 4-1 derby victory against bottom-of-the-table Ossett Albion at Throstle Nest. It started well for Albion though when Tyrone Gay gave them an 11th minute lead. But Matty James equalised 10 minutes later and then right on half-time Aiden Savory, whose previous clubs include Ossett Town, gave his side the lead. Savory scored his second and Farsley's third midway through the second half and Rob O'Brien – another who used to ply his trade with Albion`s neighbours – added a fourth two minutes from time.

Elsewhere, goals from John Couch on 71 minutes and Craig Cairns on 83 minutes took the spoils for Cammell Laird after Issac Kusaloka had made the most of a mix up at the back in the 10th minute to put the visiting Prescot Cables ahead.

Harrogate Railway Athletic edged out Yorkshire rivals Wakefield by the odd goal in five at Belle Vue, taking an early second minute lead through Nathan Cartman. Colin Hunter doubled Rail's lead on 35 minutes, but the hosts fought back to level through a Rob Bordman brace in the 55th and 67th minutes, only for Cartman to grab his second of the game to win it for the visitors 17 minutes from time.

The game between Salford City and Radcliffe Borough ended all-square at 3-3 at Moor Lane. Matt Landregan gave Boro the lead immediately after half-time and Richard Wright added a second five minutes later. But the Ammies hit Boro with two goals in four minutes just after the hour-mark from Stuart Cook and Porya Ahmadi to level matters. Then Ahmadi made it 3-2 with his second on 78 minutes before Boro earned a point to move out of the bottom two when Chris Thompson struck in injury-time.
