NPL more competitive than ever

Matlock Town boss Paul Phillips says it’s the most competitive league ever, as he aims for promotion.

The Gladiators have been out of form in recent months, but still sit well placed in third in the table.

If they do go on to secure a play-off place, it will be the first time Matlock have done so in 15 years.

Phillips said: “I’m proud of what we’ve done so far. I’m still a bit disappointed with games recently that we should have won but that’s football for you. It’s a learning curve.

“This club has come on leaps and bounds in the last 12 months. We know what we’ve got to improve on but we’ve still come a hell of a long way. Let’s embrace the players that have brought us to this position.

“The league’s the most competitive it’s ever been, just look at recent results. We’ve not been turned over by anyone and never looked like being banjoed, but we must get more goals.”

Matlock have spent 16 match days at the top of the table this season, but after being dislodged at the start of February, have struggled to find form.

Their last three games have finished 0-0, and they have won just one of their last 12 games.

They travel to struggling Basford this weekend, before welcoming Nantwich Town the following Saturday.

Two of their near rivals in the league, leaders Buxton and fourth placed Warrington Town, round off their regular season.
