NPL round-up | Saturday 13 April

By James Gordon

Radcliffe were crowned champions of the Northern Premier League on Saturday after a 2-1 victory at Whitby Town sealed the title.

The Boro required just one point from their trip to the Yorkshire Coast but came away with all three, thanks to first-half goals from Jake Thompson and Jordan Hulme.

The champions also passed the 100-goal mark for the season as they collected their 28th victory of the campaign - eight more than any other side in the division.

In the play-off race, Warrington Rylands secured a top-five berth, despite falling to a 2-1 home defeat to Lancaster City.

It was just a second loss in nine for the Blues, who pulled a goal back from the penalty spot early in the second half but couldn't force an equaliser.

Macclesfield also made sure of their own play-off place after a 3-1 win at Basford United.

Having trailed midway through the second half, the Silkmen turned the game on its head as Luke Duffy levelled 20 minutes from time before Tunde Owolabi scored a late double to seal the points.

Fourth-placed Marine opened up a six-point gap over the sides below them, meanwhile, thanks to a commanding 3-0 victory at Workington.

Bobby Grant, Owen Robinson and Josh Wardle were all on the scoresheet for the Mariners as they picked up their fifth win in six league matches.

A 4-1 defeat for Hyde United at Gainsborough Trinity means the final play-off spot remains firmly up for grabs.

That result meant Ashton United could've leapfrogged the Tigers into fifth, but they, too, fell to defeat.

Ilkeston Town ran out 2-1 winners against the Robins, who still have three games to play compared to Hyde's one.

Worksop Town's top-five hopes hit a stumbling block as they were comprehensively beaten 4-0 by Morpeth Town.

All four goals for the Highwaymen came in the second half as they ended a four-game losing run in some style.

Elsewhere, Guiseley's slim play-off ambitions were all-but-ended by Matlock Town as the Gladiators left it late to win 2-1 at the Proctor Cars Stadium.

Liam Hardy netted twice, the second of which came in the final minute, as Matlock picked up their first victory since the departure of former manager Martin Carruthers.

FC United of Manchester were also on the right side a result for the first time in four matches, easing past Bamber Bridge at Broadhurst Park.

Charlie Munro, Aaron Bennett and Lewis Gilboy were on the scoresheet for the Reds as they consolidated 14th place in the league with a 3-0 triumph.

Finally, Atherton Collieries kept their slim hopes of survival alive with a 1-0 home win against Stafford Rangers, who remain three points from safety.

Colls still need to win all three of their remaining fixtures, hope that Basford are beaten in their final two and also have the results of Bradford Park Avenue and Stafford go their way to stand any chance of avoiding the drop.
