Market Drayton Town legend Martyn Davies has been named as the new manager of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League club.

Assistant manager Davies, pictured, was appointed on Boxing Day and will take charge for the first time on Christmas Sunday when the Shropshire club host Sheffield FC in First Division South.

His appointment follows a successful period over the last few weeks assisting caretaker manager and director of football Mick Murphy.

The centre-forward, who has been at Greenfields since 2000 and has scored more than 150 goals during his time with the club, is the permanent successor to former manager Dorian Garner who was dismissed in early December.

An eventful Boxing Day saw Davies play in goal at home to Norton United in the absence of number one keeper Danny Read before before heavy snow saw the match abandoned midway through the second half.

Welcoming Davies into his new role, MDTFC chair Nicky Millington said: "The committee and board of directors are right behind him and give him our full support and if anyone can get some team spirit back into the club Martyn can."
