Olympian's name will be on plaque

The Welsh two-time World and Commonwealth champion sprinter and hurdler will do the ribbon cutting at the Scarborough Leisure Village at Weaponness on Saturday 10 June, just over a month before Steve Kittrick's side kick off against Sheffield United in the inaugural match at their new home on Saturday 15 July.

Visitors at the ceremony will get the chance to take on the athlete in a 'Beat the Olympian' fitness challenge as well as taking part in group circuits class led by the 50-year-old who was an Olympic silver medalist in the 110 metre hurdles at Seoul 1988 and has since become a sports commentator and television presenter and back in 2005 was an early contestant on Strictly Come Dancing.

The leisure village will be run by Everyone Active on behalf of Scarborough Borough Council and as part of the ceremonial opening, a number of the EVO-STIK NPL First Division North club's juniors and womens sides will be in action competing in a series of friendlies and penalty shoot-outs.

With the Scarborough Leisure Village opening its doors to the public from Monday 5 June, Seadogs supporters and the Scarborough community won't have to wait until Jackson's arrival or the Blades match to start enjoying the facilities which include the 3G pitch and stadium, swimming pools, a sports hall and state-of-the-art gym facility.

According to Seadogs chairman Trevor Bull, their imminent return to the town to a brand new stadium after playing in exile at Bridlington for the last decade is already paying dividends on the playing front for manager Kittrick.

He told yorkshirecoastradio.com: "The facilities are looking fantastic. Stupid little things make me excited like the fact that the corner flags have arrived and they're red. Alongside the swimming pools and the fitness suite as well, the whole package is absolutely tremendous.

"We're already finding that there's players queuing up to play for us and we've got to choose the ones that we want. I think the facilities play some part in that but also the fact that they'll be playing in front of massive crowds for this level of football, that's a big attraction for a player."
