Painful studding forces defender off

By David Watters

Radcliffe Borough defender Matthew Williams was forced out of Saturday's 2-2 draw at Glossop North End after suffering a serious hand injury in the EVO-STIK League clash.

Play in the EVO-STIK League North fixture was suspended for more than a quarter of an hour with the Hillmen leading 1-0 after recent signing Williams suffered at least one compound fracture.

He is believed to have caught his hand under an opponent's boot in a fair challenge and was treated on the pitch at Surrey Street for nearly 10 minutes before being able to walk off unaided and travel to hospital in a waiting ambulance soon afterwards.

Williams was hurt a minute after Lewis Lacy had put the hosts ahead on nine minutes and the Hillmen sent their best wishes to the player for a speedy recovery on Saturday evening after the clubs, pictured before kick-off, went on to share the points following Akil's Grier's second half equaliser.

A spokesman said: "It was a shocking injury where he'd been studded. He walked off himself and everybody here hopes the injury is not as bad as it looked and that he is back playing soon."
