Picton salutes stand-out supporters

South Shields joint manager Lee Picton has been hailing supporters after their EVO-STIK League opener on Saturday attracted the eighth biggest gate in Non-League.

A bumper crowd of 1,677 saw Picton and joint manager Graham Fenton guide last season's EVO-STIK League North champions to a 2-1 victory over Witton Albion, the gate at Mariners Park for the top flight clash only topped by Leyton Orient in first place and Salford City, Hartlepool United, York City, Maidstone United, Aldershot and Eastleigh elsewhere in descending order.

After their gate made @NonLeagueCrowd's top ten, Picton, pictured, took to the club's official Twitter account @SouthShieldsFC to post: "To have a crowd of almost 1,700 on the opening day of the season was absolutely incredible."

After losing 4-1 at Farsley Celtic on Tuesday night, the Mariners will be hoping another big crowd turns out this Saturday to see them bounce back while hosting Stafford Rangers in the EVO-STIK League Premier Division.
