Premier Division preview: Chance for chasing pack to move top

By James Gordon

Fourteen Northern Premier League sides return to league action on Tuesday evening after a busy weekend of FA Trophy fixtures.

However, not all teams are set to feature during the latest midweek round of games, including league leaders Stafford Rangers.

That means that Morpeth Town and in-form FC United of Manchester will have the chance to climb to the top of the division when they lock horns at Broadhurst Park.

FC United managed to put an end to South Shields’ unbeaten record last week, while the Highwaymen are also unbeaten in four.

Meanwhile, fellow high-flyers Matlock Town host Liversedge, who currently sit in bottom of the division.

Sedge have a tough test ahead of them, as the Gladiators have not lost a league match at the Proctor Cars Stadium all season.

Elsewhere, Marske United, who sit four points off top spot, will travel to Stalybridge Celtic.

Three points for the Seasiders will edge them closer to the league leaders, while they also have the cushion of games in hand on the teams around them in the table.

At Cantilever Park, Warrington Town will look to extend their three-game unbeaten run with a win over Gainsborough Trinity.

Despite being three places behind Tuesday’s hosts in the league, Trinity - who have lost just once in the league this season - have games in hand on the teams above, and three points would see them overtake the Yellows in the table.

In the night’s other action, struggling Lancaster City welcome Warrington Rylands to the Giant Axe.

Rylands have drawn their last three league games, so Jody Banim’s side will be looking to return to winning ways with a victory over the Dolly Blues.

Elsewhere, Atherton Collieries will do battle with Belper Town at the Skuna Stadium.

Despite a poor start to the season for the Nailers, they have enjoyed a recent surge in form and will be looking to kick on and climb out of the relegation zone with a win.

And finally, Nantwich Town and Marine face off at the Weaver Stadium, with both sides struggling for form.

A win for either side will be a huge boost, with the Dabbers currently residing in 18th on 10 points. Marine, meanwhile, have only won one game away from home so far this season.

The night’s other fixture, due to be contested between Whitby Town and Hyde United, has been postponed in order to allow the Tigers more time to prepare for Saturday’s FA Cup fourth qualifying round clash with Buxton.
