Premier Division round-up: Leaders beaten at home as South Shields return to winning ways

By James Gordon

Hyde United missed the chance to extend their lead at the top of the Northern Premier League after losing 1-0 at home to Matlock Town on Saturday afternoon.

John Johnston’s third goal of the season midway through the first half proved to be enough for the Gladiators, who climb to sixth with victory.

Gainsborough Trinity jumped to within two points of top spot after a 2-0 win over Ashton United.

Curtis Durose and Liam Waldock struck early as the Holy Blues recorded their third successive league win.

Meanwhile, there was late drama at Broadhurst Park as FC United let slip a two-goal lead against Warrington Rylands.

A late brace from Regan Linney looked to have been enough for all three points, but AJ Leitch-Smith pulled one back four minutes from time and Sam Egerton completed the comeback for Rylands two minutes later.

Marine climbed up to fourth after a five-goal thrashing of Liversedge.

All five goals came in the second half, with James Barrigan converting twice from penalty spot and Sol Solomon, Jonathan Spittle and Connor Evans also adding their names to the scoresheet.

Radcliffe stretched their unbeaten run in the league to six matches after an entertaining 4-2 victory over Guiseley.

Despite trailing Adam Haw’s opener midway through the first half, Boro turned the game on its head thanks to goals from Jem Karacan (2), Rick Smith and Jude Oyibo.

South Shields ended a run of three successive defeats in all competitions with a 2-1 win at home to Belper Town.

Lewis Alessandra and Dylan Motley-Henry scored for the Mariners, although their hopes of a clean sheet were gone when Harry Middleton pulled one back for the Nailers from the penalty spot.

Elsewhere in the division, Warrington Town suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at home to Marske United as Curtis Woodhouse picked up his first points as Seasiders boss.

Andrew May’s sixth-minute opener proved to be enough as the visitors withstood a barrage of second half pressure to inflict a second straight defeat on the Yellows in the space of a week.

Bamber Bridge ended a three-match losing run in the league with victory away at Atherton Collieries.

Fin Sinclair-Smith, Rhys Turner and Isaac Sinclair got the goals for the Brig as they climbed to ninth in the division.

Stafford Rangers’ four-game unbeaten run in the league came to an end thanks to an emphatic 3-0 defeat at home to Stalybridge Celtic.

Nathan Caine opened the scoring for Celtic nine minutes in, before Raul Correia scored in either half to make sure of the points.

And finally, Nantwich Town recorded a third straight win in all competitions with a 3-0 triumph at home to Morpeth Town, while Lancaster City picked up just their fourth league win of the season after coming from behind to beat Whitby Town 2-1.
