Premier Division round up: South Shields held as Marske return to winning ways

By James Gordon

South Shields moved 10 points clear at the top of the Northern Premier League on Tuesday night, despite being held to a goalless draw at Matlock Town.

The Mariners went into the game looking to record a third straight win but couldn’t find a way through against a Gladiators side that moved to within three points of the play-off places.

Meanwhile, Marske United picked up their first win since the return of manager Carl Jarrett, and their first home victory since September, as they triumphed 2-1 over Morpeth Town.

Goals in either half from Kevin Burgess and Adam Boyes put the Seasiders in control before Jeff Henderson grabbed a late consolation for the Highwaymen.

The result lifts them to 20th in the league table, five points from safety.

Finally, Ashton United edged further clear of the drop zone with a 3-1 win at home to struggling Belper Town.

The Robins soared to all three points after goals from Jason Gilchrist, Sean Newton and Harry Bunn.

Jake Avery pulled one back late on for the Nailers, who have now won just one of their last 14 league matches.
