Premier Division round-up: Yellows up to fourth, Stalybridge resurgence continues

By James Gordon

Hyde United remain top of the Northern Premier League after edging an entertaining five-goal affair away at Guiseley on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers were forced to come from behind to claim all three points, with Will Russ, Jack Redshaw and Liam Tongue all getting on the scoresheet.

South Shields kept pace with the league leaders thanks to a 2-0 win at Atherton Collieries.

Ade Shokunbi broke the deadlock on his Mariners debut before Lewis Alessandra made sure of the victory two minutes from time.

Third-placed Bamber Bridge remain three points adrift after a Fin Sinclair-Smith double helped them past Belper Town, while Warrington Town climbed to fourth after coming from behind to rescue a point at FC United of Manchester.

Bohan Dixon equalised from the penalty spot after 76 minutes to stretch the Yellows unbeaten run to nine matches, cancelling out Dontai Gabidon’s first half opener.

Gainsborough Trinity were the only side in the play-off spots to taste defeat as they succumbed to a 2-0 loss at in-form Stalybridge Celtic.

Both goals came in the first half through Harry Benns and Ciaran Summers, with Celtic recording their fifth victory in seven and keeping a third successive clean sheet in all competitions.

In the race for the top five, Marine were held 1-1 at home to Ashton United as Keilen Adams scored an 88th minute leveller for the Robins, while Dean Furman’s first goal for Warrington Rylands helped them to a 1-0 victory over Liversedge.

Meanwhile, a fine goal from Jake Thompson was enough to see Radcliffe win 1-0 at Morpeth Town.

At the Giant Axe, there was late drama as Lancaster City’s David Norris scored a stoppage time winner at home to Matlock Town, with the Gladiators thinking they’d rescued a point in the final minute of regular time, only to fall to a 2-1 defeat.

Elsewhere, Stafford Rangers eased the pressure on Matt Hill with a much-needed 2-0 victory at home to Marske United.

And in the day’s only other game, Whitby Town and Nantwich Town exchanged early second half goals in a 1-1 draw on the Yorkshire Coast.

The result leaves the Dabbers 18th in the table, one place above Saturday's hosts.
