Premier Round-up: Nightmare start for Grantham boss

By James Gordon

Scarborough Athletic moved eight points clear at the top of the Evo-Stik League Premier Division table on Tuesday night following a hard-earned 1-0 win at the Northolme against Gainsborough Trinity.

The hosts were looking to get back on track after they had suffered a 1-0 defeat at South Shields last weekend, and in front of an excellent crowd of 627, they pushed the leaders all the way.

Indeed, Boro were grateful to 'keeper Tommy Taylor for making several decent saves, with Jonny Margetts busy for the hosts on his return to the club.

But when the deadlock was broken, it was the visitors who did it when a Looping header from top scorer James Walshaw beat Trinity's new goalkeeper on loan from Sheffield United, Marcus Dewhurst

That proved to be the winner to lift Boro further clear at the top and see Trinity in eighth.

Nantwich Town are now second after also winning 1-0 on their travels.

The Dabbers beat Marine AFC at the Marine Travel Arena with a somewhat controversial goal right on the stroke of half-time.

The ball appeared to be out of play before it was returned into the box and fired beyond Mariners' keeper Martin Fearon by Craig Lindfield.

Nantwich didn't have it all their own way, however, and had their keeper, Fabian Speiss, to thank for a couple of decent saves to keep his clean sheet.

Farsley Celtic moved up to fourth in the table after a 1-0 win at strugglers Workington AFC.

The Celts had to ride their luck in the first half with the hosts striking the woodwork.

But Jimmy Spencer broke the deadlock on 66 minutes with his 8th goal of the campaign.

As debuts as a manager go, Tuesday's game at Matlock Town's DCJ Group Insurance Arena was a nightmare for new Grantham Town boss Richard Thomas!

He watched his new charges lose 7-0 to a Gladiators outfit who are now settling down under their recently-appointed manager, Dave Frecklington, and made it seven games without defeat and slip above the Gingerbreads into thirteenth in the table.

In front of a crowd of 345, Craig Westcarr scored twice in 7 minutes just after the half-hour mark to send the hosts into the break two-up.

In contrast to Thomas, Matlock's latest signing, Luke Hinsley, had a debut to remember as he went on to complete a second half hat-trick with goals in the 48th, 72nd and 79th minutes, with Westcarr having matched him by netting his third in between on 70 minutes.

Matlock even had a penalty saved by Grantham 'keeper Theo Richardson from sub Jordan Chapell but Billy Whitehead completed the rout with number seven just 4 minutes from time.

Lancaster City suffered a 6-0 mauling by leaders Scarborough last Saturday but recovered well to beat Stalybridge Celtic 1-0 at the Giant Axe.

After a very quiet first half, the Dolly Blues broke the deadlock on 66 minutes when Ryan Winder headed a cross past Celtic 'keeper Paddy Wharton.

The evening's other game saw Hednesford Town and Buxton share a 1-1 Keys Park draw.

It was against the run of play when the visitors took the lead after 36 minutes when the Pitmen lost the ball in midfield allowing Diego De Girolamo to advance and fire a long-range effort past Josef Bursik.

That looked like being the winner though, until the 2nd minute of stoppage time at the end of the game when sub Mike Howard drilled home a low shot to equalise.
