Premier Round-up: South Shields close in

By James Gordon

It’s tightening up at the top of the EVO-STIK League Premier Division, as South Shields took advantage of the top three all drawing at the weekend.

In a thrilling top of the table clash at Throstle Nest, Warrington Town came from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 at Farsley Celtic.

On the back of a seven game winning run, the Yellows led through Bohan Dixon, but a Paul Walker free-kick on the stroke of half time made it level at the break.

Farsley took control through a David Syers header and then a Mark Roberts own goal put them in command, as their unbeaten run extended to 14.

Substitute Josh Amis scored a brace of headers in the last 18 minutes, as the two teams remain a point behind leaders Nantwich.

The Dabbers maintain top spot having drawn 0-0 at Gainsborough Trinity.

Those results enabled South Shields to move within three points of Nantwich, and two points of the other two, thanks to a 1-0 win at Witton Albion, Lee Mason scoring the game’s only goal on 32 minutes.

Scarborough picked up a much-needed win following their indifferent form of late, beating Hednesford Town 5-3.

They led 3-0 at the break thanks to goals from Michael Coulson, James Walshaw and Ryan Watson. Reece King scored a brace for the Pitmen, either side of Watson’s second, but Luke Lofts restored the hosts’ three goal advantage, before Matt Dodd’s late consolation.

There were 11 goals at Basford United as they suffered a shock 8-3 mauling at the hands of Hyde United.

The Tigers led 5-0 at half time thanks to a stunning performance which included a Chib Chilaka hat-trick, and he added his fourth after the break.

Zak Goodson’s brace and a last minute goal from Lewis Carr did little to gloss over a horrendous display for the hosts, who had only lost twice at home previous to this weekend.

At the other end of the table, a 1-1 draw did little to ease Stafford Rangers and Workington’s relegation worries.

With both sides under new management, Theo Bailey-Jones scored the goal of the week with a fine overhead kick but Daniel Wordsworth earned a point for the Reds, who were rocked immediately after the game by the shock resignation of Gavin Skelton after just six days in the job.

That draw meant that Marine lifted themselves out of the bottom three courtesy of a 2-0 win at bottom side North Ferriby United.

Chris Doyle and Liam Hynes scored the goals to earn Marine their third win on their travels this season.

Matlock Town suffered a second successive defeat as Robert Wilson’s early penalty earned Lancaster City a 1-0 win, a result that keeps them out of the relegation zone.

Also keeping their noses above water are Mickleover Sports, who beat Stalybridge Celtic 2-1 thanks to a Shaquille McDonald brace.

Buxton ended a run of three without a win as they beat Whitby Town 2-0. Liam Hardy scored a first half penalty before John Pritchard celebrated the extension of his loan deal from Chester with a second half strike.
