Premier Round-up: Top two slip up

By James Gordon

Scarborough Athletic slipped to their third defeat of the season to date in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division but still possess a five-point lead at the top of the table.

That's because second-placed Nantwich Town also lost – 4-1 at the Weaver Stadium to upwardly mobile Matlock Town.

A crowd of 727 at Throstle Nest saw Farsley Celtic lead through Nathan Cartman's 23rd minute goal at half-time against the leaders.

Boro equalised 10 minutes into the second half through Michael Coulson, but a Will Hayhurst penalty restored Celtic's lead and Adam Clayton made sure with a third 16 minutes from time.

The Dabbers went into their home game with Matlock on a run of eleven league games without defeat.

Bu that came to a crashing end, although it could have been different had Ross Durrant not saved Sean Cooke's early penalty after Jamie Morgan had been felled in the box.

Steve Jones did manage to beat Durrant in the 25th minute, but that's as good as it got for the Dabbers as once Craig King equalised 10 minuets after the break, the Gladiators took command and added three more goals from Cleveland Taylor, King again and Bradley Beatson.

Basford United are now just a point behind Nantwich after they won 4-2 at home to bottom-markers North Ferriby United.

After leading through Dan Nichols' goal on the half-hour mark and 2-1 after Nathan Watson's 35th minute equaliser was cancelled out by Jordan Harrison, Ferriby couldn't hold on and Watson went on to complete his hat-trick and Liam Hearn sandwiched the other.

Warrington Town complete the top five after their 2-0 win at The Meres against Grantham Town, thanks to Bohan Dixon on 82 minutes and a Jack Mackreth penalty in time added on.

South Shields are two points back now in sixth after a 1-0 win at north-east rivals Whitby Town where a 776 crowd saw Craig Baxter's 81st minute effort win it for Shields.

Buxton are level on points with Shields after they were held to a 1-1 draw at Bower Fold by Stalybridge Celtic, whose Neil Kengni grabbed a stoppage time equaliser to a 52nd minute Michael Clarke own goal.

At the other end of the table, second-bottom Workington AFC lost 1-0 at the Don Amott Arena against Mickleover Sports, for whom Nathan Jarman scored the only goal after 64 minutes.

Third-bottom Marine AFC picked up a point from a goalless draw at the Marine Travel Arena with Hyde United, while fourth-bottom Lancaster City were another side to lose 1-0 to a 16th minute Rob Hopley goal at Wincham Park against Witton Albion.

The other two games both ended 1-1.

Bamber Bridge led at Keys Park against Hednesford Town, thanks to Matthew Argent-Barnes in the 55th minute, only for loanee Dan Sweeney to equalise 9 minutes from time, while Stafford Rangers also led through Izak Reid's 12th minute effort until 9 minutes from time too when Ashley Worsfold pulled visiting Gainsborough Trinity level.
