Premier Round-up: Yellows keep run going

By James Gordon

Basford United's tenure at the top of the Evo-Stik Premier Division table was a brief one as Warrington Town returned to the summit after beating Mickleover Sports at Cantilever Park on Tuesday night.

Basford had overhauled the Wire after a 2-0 win against Whitby Town 24 hours earlier, but they lost top spot when Warrington won 1-0, thanks to a goal from Dylan Vassallo after just 6 minutes – hammering a volley past Lewis King in the Mickleover goal after a spot of head tennis in the box.

Scarborough Athletic moved into third, level on points with Basford, after a 2-0 win at the Flamingo Land Stadium against Witton Albion.

Boro had been shocked at home by Nantwich Town last Saturday and had to wait until 4 minutes into the second half to break the deadlock when Bailey Gooda got hold of a half-cleared corner and rifled the ball past Albion 'keeper Greg Hall.

Walshaw doubled the home side's lead with 20 minutes remaining when he fired home a cross from the right.

Buxton are fourth after inflicting a fourth successive league and cup defeat on South Shields, who they moved above in the process.

A deflected Liam Hardy effort put the Bucks in front after just 7 minutes.

Shields had a great chance to equalise midway through the second half though when Josh Gillies pounced on a loose back-pass, rounded the keeper, but was knocked off balance and shot wide.

Bucks eventually doubled their lead on 78 minutes when a free-kick fell to Greg Young, who turned and fired home.

Lancaster City, who appointed a new manager yesterday (see separate news item), weren't able to follow up last weekend's first win of the season against Buxton, going down to a 2-0 defeat at Throstle Nest to Farsley Celtic.

After knocking at the door of the City defence for long periods, like buses, two goals came along at the same time for Celtic to earn the spoils as Paul Walker on 65 minutes and then Jack Higgins immediately afterwards made it 2-0.

Grantham Town suffered their first home league defeat to date, 2-1 against Hednesford Town.

Joe Fitzpatrick put the Pitmen in front after 25 minutes and then Jack McGovern levelled from the penalty spot just shy of the hour-mark after a foul on Cenk Acar.

The Gingerbreads pushed hard for a winner, but in the end were punished a minute from time when Mike Howard made it 2-1 to the Pitmen.

Marine AFC's improved form continued as they earned a last-gasp win against Stafford Rangers at the Marine Travel Arena.

It looked to be heading for a goalless draw – especially when the Mariners' Danny Mitchley hit the bar 6 minutes from time.

But in the 89th minute, the hosts were awarded a penalty for a foul by Sam Coulson, and Craig Carney duly converted.

North Ferriby United suffered an eighth defeat in twelve games at home against fellow strugglers Matlock Town.

Dave Frecklington's first win as the Gladiators' boss saw them move off bottom spot following a comprehensive 5-2 win.

Craig Westcarr helped himself to a hat-trick, converting an 84th minute penalty to complete it, with Marcus Marshall and Cleveland Taylor also on the mark for the visitors, with Jordan Harrison and Luke Hinsley replying for Ferriby, who had Ben Clappison dismissed late on for a second yellow card.

It finished 0-0 at Ewen Fields between Hyde United and Workington AFC, while nearby at Bower Fold, Sean Cooke gave Nantwich a 37th minute lead that Ross Dent cancelled out 5 minutes later for Stalybridge Celtic – the scoreline remaining that way until the end.
