Stafford Rangers are celebrating a £600 windfall for new away kit after their annual golf day beat the bad weather.

Unlike the Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division club’s charity cricket match which had to be postponed thanks to this summer's wet and stormy weather, twelve teams of officials, sponsors, suppliers and fans were able to enjoy the 18 hole event at the Stafford Castle Golf Club.

Persistent rain at the start of the week had put Thursday’s competition in doubt and the Marston Road club have thanked the course’s Head Greenkeeper Dan Adams for ensuring it went ahead.

The winning team on the day was Libra FMC Limited headed up by Stafford Rangers manager Greg Clowes, pictured alongside Mick Heath, left, and Steve Armitage, right. Stafford's manager said the event was a great chance for everyone connected with the club to get together and joked afterwards that cynics might think his team's three point victory was a fix!

Keen Rangers fan Alan Smith from Stafford Digital Systems came a close second with Ridgway’s Caterers claiming third spot.

The club’s Commercial Manager Stuart Maun said: "The golf day was a huge success. It was great to see so many people turn out for the event. We are also very grateful to Sandon Road Motors & Horsley’s of Stafford, who provided sponsorship for the event.

"I also was very lucky to have the assistance of Ken Hunt aiding me with all the golfing aspects on the day - which was helpful as I have never lifted a golf club in my life!"

The Martson Road outfit are now planning their next ‘off the pitch’ sporting event – November’s SRFC Bowling Evening when supporters take on the players at Stafford Tenpin Bowling Alley.
