Rangers ready to push on

Stafford Rangers defender Luke George insists they're finally turning a ‘corner’ in their Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division campaign, writes Lewis Deakin.

George, who scored last Saturday in their 1-1 draw against Nantwich Town and has helped Rangers defeat seventh placed Chorley in recent weeks, reckons manager Greg Clowes has the squad to quickly start climbing the table and go on to enjoy a good season after a disappointing start.

Rangers are still in three different cup competitions and on Tuesday night beat neighbours Stafford Town 2-1 in the Walsall Senior Cup to go four games unbeaten.

Stafford now host Conference Premier Southport in the FA Trophy on Saturday and George said: "We have a good squad full of talent and experience and the league itself is going to be open, more or less anyone can win it. Confidence is key in any sport and winning matches is the best way to move the club forward."

Stafford Rangers striker Danny Quinn is one of the league’s top goal scorers with seven goals so far and George pinpoints the striker as key to the club’s ambitions, starting this weekend in the FA Trophy.

He said: "He has got himself a few goals at the start of the season, now we need to push on with his good work so he can become the league's outright top goal scorer. Although all the pressure isn’t on him, he needs good service to begin with and a solid defence to build from. Football is a team game and we all need to be pulling in the same direction."

George, who recently returned from a knee injury himself, hopes Stafford's squad can now stay clear of injuries to start realising their potential after being plagued so far this season.

"We have had a few players pick up injuries early on in the season which was a blow but we have got good players who can come in and do a job," said the defender. "The quality in the current squad is there but we still need a bit of time to gel.

"Everybody is confident that our quality will shine through and it is only a matter of time before the players we have in our squad start achieving what everyone at the club wants."
