Record breakers make history, again!

Curzon Ashton

Curzon Ashton's record breaking side wrote their names into football's history books again on Easter Monday, recording their biggest ever win in the Northern Premier League and hitting double figures in a game for only the third time in their history.

The Evo-Stik Northern Premier League club's players had Non-League's statisticians leafing through their record books on Easter Monday after they hammered Wakefield 10-1. Remarkably, the First Division North club, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, have already set an FA Cup record this season when they beat Maltby Main 8-1 in the competition's First Qualifying Round back in September.

The first two occasions the Nash went past two figures were both in their first season in the Manchester Amateur League back in 1963-64. They reached their highest ever score of 13-0 against Mobberley in January 1964 shortly after beating Bowlee 10-1 in a cup tie.

Curzon's programme editor Ian Seymour believes a roasting for the players from manager John Flanagan after one of their worst performances of the season saw them defeated 2-0 at Ossett Albion on Easter Saturday may have played a part in inspiring the history making performance.

Seymour said: "John Flanagan gave the team a dressing down and rang the changes and their response couldn't have been dream about as they went to town on a Wakefield side who it must be said had been severally weakened with players unavailable."

Seymour also hailed the club's hot-shot Kristian Dennis for his six goal haul that also set a club playing record. "As well as the team breaking a record it was also a personal triumph for Kristian Dennis who became the first Curzon player to score six in a game," he said. "Dennis had already joined an exclusive club when his five goals against Garforth in August made him only the third Curzon player to reach that mark.

"He then became the second member of an even more exclusive club when he became only the second Curzon player to score four, or more, in a game on more than one occasion when he hit all four in the 4-3 win over Ramsbottom United. Now he stands alone as the only player to score six in a game and of course the only player to score four or more in a game on three occasions."

Dennis can now set his sights on the club's individual goalscoring record in a season. He is one behind Geoff Logan who in 1963-64 scored 46 from just 35 games. That wasn't broken until 2006-07 when two players hit the 50 goal mark - Mike Norton scoring 50 from 58 games and Steve Moore 51 from just 54 games. Dennis currently has 45 goals from 44 starts plus one sub appearance.

On a day of records, Seymour also revealed that defender Simon Woodford passed a personal milestone in front of goal against Wakefield. Before the current campaign the full-back had never scored more than one goal in an entire season but has now scored two in a game on two occasions.

Before Monday's match three players were also recognised for completing 100 appearances for Curzon - Chris McDonagh, Sam Walker and Matty Purcell. Ironically, all three marked their 100th game with a defeat.

McDonagh was the first to reach the milestone when Curzon lost 3-4 in the Manchester Premier Cup to Salford in January. Purcell was next, losing 3-0 at Bamber Bridge in his 51st start to go with 49 appearances off the bench. Sam Walker reached his 100th game with the 0-1 home defeat by Ossett Town, his 50th appearance of the season.

Seymour says he hopes he won't be updating those records soon and joked: "Given such a record, the manager could perhaps be forgiven if he offloads any player who reaches 99 appearances in future!”
