Reds boss to thank fundraising fans

By David Watters

Workington's supporters will be thanked in advance by the EVO-STIK League club's joint manager David Hewson for boosting his budget when the new season kicks off at a fans forum on Thursday night.

Hewson, pictured, is meeting supporters at Borough Park to update them on the club's plans for the 2018-19 season after the Reds faithful launched a 'war chest' appeal to supplement the playing budget when the new campaign kicks off on Saturday 18 August.

After helping to set up the appeal to raise £25,000, Brian White from the Workington Reds Supporters Club will also be at the meeting to explain how the extra funding will be utilised by Hewson and joint boss Lee Andrews.

In a statement inviting supporters to attend, White was also singled out for praise by officials at the EVO-STIK League Premier Division club.

A Reds spokesman said: "David will thank Brian White and the supporters for their efforts over the past six weeks for contributing to the 'war chest’ fund, which will supplement the playing budget for the 2018-19 season.

"When it became known that management would have to operate to a strict budget, Brian devised a well thought out fund raising initiative, dubbed the ‘war chest’, to aid player recruitment or safeguard current squad members drifting elsewhere.

"The majority of the squad were quick to declare their allegiance for the new season, a major boost to the club, but management need to boost numbers to avoid a repeat of the situation over the last three months of the '17-18 campaign."
