Reds legend set to entertain fans

Fans of EVO-STIK League Grantham Town can start looking forward to being entertained by Liverpool legend Alan Kennedy.

The two-time European Cup winner and Reds legend, pictured, has been booked as guest speaker for the EVO-STIK League Premier Division club's next next sportsman's night at the Meres on Friday 9 March.

Now 63, the Sunderland-born left-back enjoyed a 22 year career in club football in England, Denmark, Belgium and Wales playing for Newcastle United, Liverpool, Sunderland, Wigan Athletic, Hartlepool United, B 1903 and Belgian outfit Beerschot.

After moving into Non-League in 1990 at Northwich Victoria, he went on to turn out for Wrexham, Colne Dynamoes, Morecambe, Netherfield, Radcliffe Borough and Barrow. As well as lifting the European Cup with Liverpool in 1981 and 1984, he also collected five league titles with the Reds between 1979 and 1984.

A club spokesman said: "We're delighted to announce that two-time European Cup winner Alan Kennedy will be the speaker at our next "An Evening with" event. If you're a Liverpool or Newcastle United fan, this is a night not to be missed. Book your place today!"

Officials at the Gingerbreads, who are hosting Stourbridge in the EVO-STIK League's Premier Division on Saturday, say tickets to the event are priced at £30 per person.

* Grantham manager Adam Stevens called on fans to "get behind the team" on Friday ahead of the weekend fixture after his promotion-chasing side dropped to third in the table following Tuesday night's 1-1 draw away to Barwell.

Calling for supporters to be the club's 12th man, Stevens told the club's website: "The lads have played really well so far this season but the hard work is not over. It's always beneficial to have great support from the fans like we have had all season.

"All I can ask from them is to continue to get behind the side this weekend in what will be another tough game. With their support and the quality I know we have, I am confident we can get the three points."

The Gingerbreads are now unbeaten in five games in all competitions, last losing at home to Buxton in December, and trail league leaders Altrincham by nine points.
