Richardson strikes out on his own

Tommy Lawson's number two at Skem for the last decade, pictured, was unveiled on Friday after Paxton announced earlier this week that he was standing down to concentrate on his work commitments.

Richardson, who left Skem on Thursday after Cables asked the EVO-STIK NPL Premier Division club for permission to speak to Lawson's trusted number two, will take the helm at EVO-STIK NPL First Division North rivals Ramsbottom United in the first qualifying round of the FA Trophy on Saturday.

In a statement announcing his appointment, Cables said: "Following on from Andy's Paxton's decision to step down from the manager's role at Prescot Cables due to work commitments the club have moved swiftly to secure the services of Brian Richardson from Skelmersdale United where he was assistant manager.

"The club are delighted to secure the services of Brian and look forward to a successful future together as we look to build on the strong foundations laid by Andy Paxton. Brian brings with him an extensive knowledge of the Non-League game and will be continuing with the back room staff that are currently at the club."

"The club would like to thank the board of Skelmersdale United and Tommy Lawson for allowing Brian to come and talk to Prescot Cables, their assistance has helped make this a smooth appointment."

Former Blackpool pro and part-time school teacher Richardson is looking forward to striking out on his own at Valerie Park after the success he enjoyed at Stormy Corner with Lawson.

He said: "I would like to go on record for thanking the board at Prescot for giving me the opportunity to manage again after being assistant at Skelmersdale for the last ten years. I am excited at the prospect of working with a club with an excellent tradition in Non-League football.

"I was impressed with the optimism of the board and I know Andy Paxton has done a tremendous job on the playing side in his short time at the club. I am committed to working hard on behalf of the people who have trusted me with this position and know the players will follow my lead in caring about the club."

He added: "I leave behind a great club with many friends and a top man in Tommy Lawson and hope I can build at Prescot a relationship as strong as the one I left."
