RIP Anthony Hughes

By James Gordon

The Northern Premier League is saddened to learn of the passing of Southern League chairman, Anthony Hughes.

Anthony grew up watching the Southern League and fulfilled a lifelong ambition when he became the league’s chairman in June 2022, having first become a league director in June 2003. He also served as the league’s FA representative from July 2016 until October 2023.

He dedicated more than 30 years of his life to his local club, Merthyr Town, where his involvement included being club secretary, director, board member and supporter.

NPL chairman, Mark Harris, said: “Anthony was a gentleman, a good friend and knew his football. As a colleague he was always very balanced and considered, always fighting his league’s corner whilst seeing the bigger picture. He will be hugely missed by us all.”

Everyone at the Northern Premier League sends their condolences to Anthony’s family and friends.
