Saturday's FA Trophy action review

FA Trophy Third Qualifying Round

There were a couple of stand-out results in the FA Trophy's Third Qualifying Round on Saturday – and they saw exits for Football Conference sides at the hands of Evo-Stik Northern Premier League outfits, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Pride of place has to go to Evo-Stik NPL First Division North lower mid-table Yorkshire side Ossett Town, who dumped Conference North Workington out of the competition. And they had to come back from a goal behind to win too after Jonny Wright had given the visiting Reds a 13th minute lead.

Town had actually missed two golden opportunities to take the lead before Wright struck, and the home supporters had to wait until the 65th minute to celebrate Shane Kelsey's equaliser. And then with a long midweek journey to Cumbria looking likely, Andy Catton popped up with Ossett's winner.

Evo-Stik NPL First Division South side King's Lynn Town are flying high in the league, but their 3-0 victory over Conference South strugglers Eastbourne Borough is still a very noteworthy performance.

In front of a crowd of 661, Lynn broke the deadlock after 64 minutes through big striker Russ Dunkley. Steve Spriggs doubled the home side's lead seven minutes from time and then Sam Mulready made sure with a third in stoppage time.

Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division outfit Stafford Rangers enjoyed a good Trophy record in the competition's early days – winning it twice and the competition's runners-up once – but that was back in the 1970s and they have endured an indifferent time in the Trophy since.

However, they managed to see off Conference North visitors Bradford Park Avenue at Marston Road on Saturday to progress to the First Round.

Rangers fell a goal behind just a minute before half-time when Richard Marshall put Avenue in front. But just five minutes after the break Ryan Brown equalised and then Danny Quinn's penalty on 71 minutes gave Rangers the lead. Three minutes from time Fabrice Kasiama made sure of the home side's progress with number three.

Stafford's league rivals Matlock Town won the Trophy back in 1975 and they progressed at Causeway Lane against Conference North visitors Stalybridge Celtic, whose Corey Gregory gave them a 34th minute lead.

Defender James Lukic eventually pulled the Gladiators back on terms just before the hour-mark before Massiah McDonald maintained his good recent goalscoring form with the winner with less than three minutes remaining.

Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division side Rushall Olympic's 2-1 win against Conference North outfit Droylsden was achieved at the Bloods own Butcher's Arms – a place notoriously difficult to obtain a result.

All the goals came in the final quarter, with Ahmed Obeng grabbing a brace for Olympic in the 76th and 79th minutes, rendering Carlos Logan's last-minute penalty replay as just a consolation.

Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division club Worksop Town surprised the majority in the 1,410 crowd at the Exacta Stadium by earning a 2-2 draw and a home replay against Conference North high-flyers Chester FC.

And to make it even more meritorious, the Tigers found themselves 2-0 down inside 15 minutes to a Nathan Jarman brace. But Leon Mettam reduced the deficit eioght minutes after half-time and then Ashley Burbeary equalised with 12 minutes remaining. And Worksop nearly won it with five minutes remaining as a quick break from Burbeary saw him pull it back to Owain Warlow inside the area but his shot was blazed over the bar.

High-flying Guiseley were the day's biggest winners, hammering Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division Whitby Town 7-0 with James Walshaw netting a hat-trick and Kevin Holsgrove, Andy Holdsworth, Josh Wilson and Nicky Boshell singles.

Solihull had a tricky Damson Park tie against in-form NPL Premier Division side AFC Fylde but, despite falling behind to a 17th minute Harry Winter effort, went through when Omar Bogle equalised within a minute and then scored what proved to be the winner two minutes later.

The Shaymen had a tough battle at NPL First Division North side Cammell Laird, but came through, courtesy of Gareth Seddon 78th minute effort.
