Saturday's First Division North action review

By David Watters

It was a welcome return to a full fixture list in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division North on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

And leaders Warrington Town and second-placed Northwich Victoria both won to maintain their big advantage over third-placed Glossop North End.

Warrington are nine points in front of the Vics, who possess five games in hand. The Wire though boosted their goal tally with a 5-0 win at bottom-markers and still win-less New Mills.

The valiant Millers held the leaders to a goalless opening 45 minutes but it took only five minutes of the second half for Joe Holt to break the deadlock. That opened the floodgates, with Ben Deegan adding the second on 63 minutes, Holt again making it 3-0 on 70 minutes and then Ciaran Kilheeney bagging a brace in the 79th and 81st minutes to make it a nap hand.

Northwich faced a tougher challenge at fourth-placed Ossett Albion, but came through it with flying colours in front of watching new boss Adam Lakeland.

The Vics won 3-0 with Brian Summerskill giving them a 21st minute lead that Richard Bennett doubled 10 minutes later. Iain Howard added a third two minutes into the second half at Dimple Wells.

Glossop were beaten by the same scoreline by Vics` neighbours Witton Albion, who are now only six points off the top five after a fourth successive win.

Danny Andrews proved to be Witton`s hero, netting a hat-trick against the third-placed visitors, with goals in the 36th, 74th and 88th minutes.

Burscough remain in fifth after a 2-1 home win against Brighouse Town.

Michael Monaghan gave the Linnets a great start with a goal inside the opening five minutes. But Tom Robinson pulled the Yorkshire side back on level terms on 56 minutes, only for Nick Ryan to win it for the hosts on 65 minutes.

Spennymoor Town are just a point behind Burscough in sixth after Nathan Fisher`s early fourth minute effort eventually proved to be enough at Clitheroe.

Lancaster City are level on points with the Moors, although they've played five more games, and dropped a place after being held to a 1-1 Giant Axe draw by Droylsden.

The crowd had to patient but it was the Bloods who broke the deadlock on 77 minutes through Will Hasler-Cregg. But Zach Clark rescued a point for the Dolly Blues four minutes from time.

Farsley Celtic and Mossley AFC are still in reach of the top five and both earned narrow wins on Saturday.

Farsley edged out Bamber Bridge 2-1 at Throstle Nest with Adam Clayton after 10 minutes and Paddy Miller 5 minute after the break outgunning Matty Kay`s 69th minute reply.

Mossley were best-of-five winners at Seel Park against Kendal Town, whose Nathan Bondswell on 21 minutes and Sam Bailey four minutes later cancelled out Michael Thomas` 10th minute opener for the home side. But Andy Keogh on 61 minutes and Tom Pratt from the penalty spot three minutes later turned the game in the Lilywhites` favour.

Second-bottom Harrogate Railway Athletic shared a goalless draw with fellow strugglers Radcliffe Borough at Stainton Park, while Ossett Town sandwich them in third-bottom spot after losing 4-0 at Trafford, whose goals all came in the second half from Jack Dorney on 65 minutes, Aaron Burns on 73 minutes, Chris McDonagh five minutes from time and then Sam Noar in stoppage time.

Scarborough Athletic`s disappointing season continues and they are fifth-bottom after going down to a 3-0 Queensgate defeat to Prescot Cables.

Sam Staunton-Turner bagged a brace for Cables in the 26th and 31st minutes, with Phil Bannister adding the third on 69 minutes.
