Saturday's First Division South action review

Evo-Stik NPL First Division South

It`s still all to play for in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League's First Division South title race, after wins for both leaders Halesowen Town and second-placed Coalville Town, although it looks like the play-offs for Leek Town after losing to the Ravens, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Halesowen inflicted a fifth successive defeat on Carlton Town, winning 3-1 in Nottingham. The Yeltz enjoyed the better of the encounter but had to wait until the 54th minute to take the lead, Ben Haseley lifting the ball over Jonathon Viscosi in the Millers goal.

Carlton levelled within two minutes when Danny Elliott headed home from close range before Haseley restored their advantage on 79 minutes when he headed home Asa Charlton's cross.

The visitors wrapped up the points five minutes from time with what seemed to be an own goal after a goalmouth scramble, with Thomas Tonks hovering to make sure.

Halesowen stay top, two points ahead of Coalville, but the Ravens have a game in hand.

They won the `six-pointer` at Harrison Park against Leek in front of a crowd of 575, Cameron Stuart scoring the crucial only goal of the game after 39 minutes.

The play-off places looked like already being sewn-up with either Halesowen or Coalville, Leek, Belper Town and Mickleover Sports being the teams involved.

However, Sutton Coldfield Town`s 1-0 win over Mickleover gives the Royals a mathematical chance of catching the Derbyshire outfit, Daryl Taylor scoring their winner at Coles Lane after 69 minutes.

Belper were already assured of their top five spot and they kept Brigg Town in the relegation battle after a 3-0 win at Christchurch Meadow.

Brigg trailed 2-0 at half-time to goals from top scorer Jon Froggatt and conceded another goal 17 minutes from time to Mark Ward.

The Zebras remain in seventeenth place, five points clear of bottom-placed Kidsgrove Athletic with two games remaining. Athletic maintained hope of avoiding the drop with a 2-1 home win over Romulus.

It was a game Grove had to win and they did just that, courtesy of goals from Jordan Johnson after 20 minutes and Shane Reaney four minutes later – Peter Folkes replying with a consolation right at the death for Roms.

It`s between Kidsgrove, Bedworth United, Lincoln United, Brigg and Market Drayton Town for the relegation spot, and Newcastle Town did neighbours Grove a favour by winning 3-2 at Ashby Avenue to keep Lincoln in the fight.

Brendan McDaid gave the home side a 10th minute lead, only for Jordan Cole after 26 minutes and Tim Sanders three minutes into the second half to give Castle a lead that Kern Miller cancelled out after 65 minutes. But Josh Gordon popped up with Castle`s winner with 12 minutes remaining.

Bedworth have, on paper, the hardest two final two games against Sutton Coldfield and Leek.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Scarborough Athletic won 2-0 at The Moat against Gresley FC with goals from Andy Milne after 57 minutes and Jordan Thewlis 15 minutes from time, while Goole AFC won 4-1 at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds against Market Drayton, who still need a point or two to be safe.

The Shropshire side took a third minute lead but a brace from Mohammed Sabo and one from Rory Coleman made it 3-1 to the Vikings at the break. Sabo finally completed his hat-trick from the spot in time added on at the end of the game.

Loughborough Dynamo edged out Sheffield FC by the odd goal in five with Nathan Watson completing a hat-trick for the home side in the fifth, 33rd and 90th minutes – Matt Roney from the spot on 54 minutes and Andy Gascoigne, also from the spot, on 78 minutes, replying.

Chasetown and Rainworth Miners Welfare shared a 0-0 draw at The Scholars in the last of Saturday's game.
