EVO-STIK NPL First Division South

The EVO-STIK Northern Premier League First Division South was not hit as hard as its sister northern section with the overnight frost, losing only the game at Lincoln United, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

No worries for leaders Sutton Coldfield Town on their 3G at Coles Lane as they increased their advantage at the top to four points after winning 2-1 against Norton United and then seeing that second-placed Newcastle Town had surprisingly been beaten at home by struggling Stocksbridge Park Steels.

After recovering from falling behind to an early third minute Michael Lennon goal, Sutton Coldfield turned it round with goals from Jordan Nadat after 21 minutes and Scott Lycett just before the break.

Steels ended an eight-game win-less run by beating Newcastle at the Lyme Valley Stadium.

Bradley Grayson after 42 minutes and then Lee Garside on 71 minutes gave Steels a 2-0 lead. Tom Unwin reduced that by one six minutes later and then James Askey equalised with five minutes to go, only for the visitors to grab three vital points with a second for Grayson in stoppage time.

Third-placed Mickleover Sports and now fourth-placed Spalding United both won, but Stafford Rangers dropped to fifth after being held to a draw.

Mickleover beat Carlton Town 3-1 at home, thanks to goals from Chris Palmer after 51 minutes, Dwayne Wiley after 77 and Jacob Hazel three minutes later – Jamie Walker having equalised just past the hour-mark.

Spalding edged out Romulus 1-0 at the Sir Halley Stewart Fields, courtesy of a 57th minute Jordan Hempenstall effort.

Stafford fell behind to a 41st minute Jack Langston goal at The Moat against sixth-placed Gresley FC, but Christian Dacres salvaged a point with the leveller on 56 minutes.

Bottom-markers Kidsgrove Athletic recorded only their ninth point to date after earning a 2-2 draw at Chasetown.

Dave Walker put Grove in front after 17 minutes, only for Nathaniel Waite to give the Scholars parity less than a minute later. That was it until 10 minutes from the end when new signing Andy Kinsey again put the basement outfit in front, this time from the spot, only for Lee Butler to grab a last-gasp leveller for the hosts.

Coalville Town are slowly improving and gained a 4-1 win at strugglers Rainworth Miners Welfare, coming back from being a ninth minute Alex Ford goal down to win.

Jake Woolley eventually equalised seven minutes after the break, Nathan Watson put the Ravens in front seven minutes later and then Sam Brooks after 67 minutes and Watson in the last minute made it 4-1.

Second-bottom Brigg Town are only a point in front of Kidsgrove and now six from the safety-mark after losing 2-0 at The Hawthorns to Sheffield FC, for whom Michael Onovwigun after 12 minutes and Richard Stirrup five minutes from the end were the marksmen.

Third-bottom Market Drayton Town and mid-table Tividale shared a 2-2 draw in Shropshire in which the hosts came back from two-down to goals from Karl Edwards after 37 minutes and Ebanks Deqwon on the hour-mark to draw.
