Sutton Coldfield Town, beaten at home by struggling Kidsgrove Athletic last week, are back in pole position in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South table on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Royals won at home to Carlton Town while overnight leaders Newcastle Town lost at home to play-off chasing Stafford Rangers.

At Coles Lane, Carlton took a shock 18th minute lead through Martin Ball. But 11 minutes later Justin Richards equalised and then netted the winner from the penalty spot with just seven minutes to go.

At the Lyme Valley Stadium, Jazz Luckie broke the deadlock to give Rangers a 53rd minute lead that Sam Smith doubled on the hour-mark.

Mickleover Sports are just four points behind Newcastle but possess no less than six games in hand on them and seven on Sutton Coldfield.

They beat play-off chasers Spalding United 2-1 at home, with goals from veteran Gary Ricketts after 21 minutes and Andy Dale on 64 minutes – all after Jamie Stevens had given the Tulips a first-minute lead.

Leek Town have played one game less than Mickleover and they also remained firmly in the race after edging a 1-0 derby win at Harrison Park against Norton United, courtesy of a Sam Hall goal in the 12th minute.

Gresley FC slipped up in their top five chase, dropping two points at The Moat against Romulus, whose Ed Akenkorah cancelled out Alex Steadman`s 16th minute opener in the 34th minute.

Eighth-placed Lincoln United also slipped up, losing 2-1 at Owen Street to Coalville Town, for whom Alex Dean bagged a brace in the 12th and 46th minutes – Scott Ruthuen replying four minutes after the break.

Brigg Town lost for the twenty-fifth time but after suffering two successive 7-1 defeats, a 1-0 loss at Sheffield FC, for whom Jamie Hadfield scored seven minutes from the end, is an improvement.

Second-bottom Rainworth Miners Welfare are just a point behind third-bottom Kidsgrove, who lost to a 76th minute Dan Ashton effort at Tividale, after sharing a 1-1 draw at Loughborough Dynamo.

Daryll Thomas' 44th minute penalty led the way until Romaine Graham popped up with an 88th minute leveller for the Wrens.

Stocksbridge Park Steels pushed themselves six points clear of the drop zone after a 2-1 win at Bracken Moor against Goole AFC.

Richard Stirrup bagged a brace for Steels in the 17th and 49th minutes, Derry Robson replying nine minutes from time.

That win was even more important as the side immediately below them, Market Drayton Town, lost by the same scoreline at home to Chasetown.

Jon Haynes gave the Scholars a seventh minute lead that Nick Turton doubled after 20 minutes, with James Askey scoring the Shropshire side`s reply four minutes later.
