Saturday's First Division South action review

By David Watters

It`s going to require a massive loss of form for Stafford Rangers to blow promotion from the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South after Saturday`s 1-0 win at play-off chasing Lincoln United, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Ben Haseley scored the only goal at Ashby Avenue after 20 minutes, but second-placed Coalville Town`s goalless draw at Owen Street against another top five hopeful, Market Drayton Town, extended Rangers` lead at the top to seventeen points. And although the Ravens and most of the others below do possess games in hand over Stafford, the gap is surely too big to see them not go up now.

Shaw Lane Aquaforce moved into third place after they won convincingly on the 3G at Coles Lane against another contender, Romulus, and overtook Basford United, who could only draw at Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Oscar Radford gave Shaw Lane an 18th minute lead on their first visit to Roms and then Lee Bennett after 24 minutes and Gavin Allott on the half-hour mark made it 3-0.

Mark Branch`s penalty reduced the arrears two minutes later but Bennett on 71 minutes and Radford later minutes later both scored again to make it a nap hand for the visitors.

The game at Bracken Moor was played in terrible conditions, kicking-off in a blizzard and was even suspended for a while in the second half during a hail storm.

Ashley Grayson had given Basford an early third minute lead that Rory Coleman had cancelled out from the spot on 22 minutes. A Matt Reay own goal restored the Nottingham side`s lead eight minutes before the break and Brodie Lichfield pulled Steels back on level terms on 66 minutes.

Not too far away, Chasetown moved into fifth spot after a 4-0 win at Sheffield FC.

Paul Sullivan scored the only goal of the opening half after 37 minutes. George Washbourne added a second four minutes after the break and then Nick Turton on 55 minutes and Sullivan again three minutes later completed the scoring.

Second-bottom Loughborough Dynamo pulled level on points with third-bottom Goole AFC after they shared a 2-2 home draw with top five-chasing Spalding United and the Vikings were beaten 2-1 at Gresley FC.

Dynamo turned round 2-0 up, thanks to a brace from Kevin Hemagou after 10 and 19 minutes. But Adam Jackson after 67 minutes and then Jamie Graham eight minutes later rescued a point for the Tulips. John Guy after 24 minutes and Jordan Ball on the half-hour mark saw Gresley lead right until the last seconds when Nick Guest pulled one back for Goole from the spot.

Leek Town and now Rugby Town are well in contention for a top five challenge.

Leek`s Tim Grice scored the only goal in a win at Harrison Park over fourth-bottom Carlton Town, while David Kolodynski bagged a brace in the 33rd and 37th minute to see off Belper Town at Christchurch Meadow.

Daventry Town`s fifth successive defeat has seen them drop down to seventeenth. Their latest defeat came at Communications Park against Newcastle Town, whose Harry Clayton bagged a brace and Luke Askey one, with Edilson Panzo-Antonio replying.
