Saturday's First Division South action review

By David Watters

Stafford Rangers lost for only the fourth time this season to have their lead at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South table cut to fourteen points, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Rangers went down to a 1-0 Marston Road defeat to third-placed Shaw Lane Aquaforce in front of a crowd of 1,007, the experienced James Walshaw scored the only goal just past the hour-mark.

And with second-placed Coalville Town also winning, beating play-off chasers Spalding United, Rangers` lead suddenly looks threatened with the Ravens possessing four games in hand.

Tom Waumsley had the Tulips in front after 22 minutes at Owen Street, but Jake Woolley equalised four minutes later and Alex Troke scored what turned out to be the winner six minutes later.

Leek Town are fifth after a 4-0 success at Communications Park against troubled Daventry Town.

Niall Maguire scored the only goal of the opening half after 20 minutes. But Omar Haughton after 63 minutes, Chris Baker 13 minutes from time and Lee Cropper a minute from the end, sealed a comfortable win for the visitors.

Chasetown and Stocksbridge Park Steels maintained interest in the top five with 1-0 wins on Saturday.

The Scholars won at Goole AFC, courtesy of a goal from Paul Sullivan right on half-time, while Steels sealed a home success, thanks to Scott Ruthven after 70 minutes.

Lincoln United`s hopes, however, suffered after losing 2-1 at The Moat against Gresley FC.

Player boss Gary Ricketts showed how it`s done with the opener after 14 minutes, but Mitch Griffiths looked as though he`d earned United a point when he equalised on the half-hour mark, only for Jack Langston to win it in stoppage time at the end of the game.

Bottom side Tividale picked up a home point from a 3-3 draw with Market Drayton Town, who trailed to Chris Rabone`s 25th minute opener before levelling through James O`Neill.

After that was cancelled out Chris Sterling`s 42nd minute effort five minutes after the break, Cohen Bramall gave the visitors the lead for the first time after 57 minutes before Tivi shared the spoils with a 79th minute leveller from Scott Devlin.

Carlton Town won 2-0 at home against Sheffield FC to move five points clear of the drop zone, Danny Gordon`s brace after 45 and 78 minutes – the second from the spot – sealing the Nottingham side`s victory.

Belper Town went nap at second-bottom Loughborough Dynamo, who found themselves 3-0 down inside half an hour through Ben Watkiss, Laurence Constable and Alex Steadman.

Mark Shelton pulled one back five minutes after the break, only for Dominic Allen to make it 4-1 just five minutes later. Will Dennis pulled a second back for Dynamo but Steadman`s penalty in stoppage time made it a nap hand for the Nailers.

And it was a tale of two penalties at Kidsgrove Athletic, whose Anthony Malbon scored from the spot 10 minutes from time to cancel out Kevin Thornton`s 20th minute penalty for Rugby Town.
