Saturday's First Division South action review

By David Watters

Stafford Rangers and Shaw Lane Aquaforce both won again on Saturday to keep the EVOI-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division title race alive, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Rangers hold a seven-point lead, but Shaw Lane have two games in hand.

Stafford edged out Market Drayton Town by the odd goal in five in Shropshire, taking a 2-0 lead with goals from Ben Haseley after 33 minutes and Christian Dacres just before the break. But James Bennett-Tindall and James O`Neill pulled the home side level with two goals in four minutes around the hour-mark before Dacres grabbed his second and Rangers` winner 16 minutes from time.

Shaw Lane won 1-0 at home to Carlton Town, courtesy of a James Walshaw effort right on half-time.

Coalville Town and Basford United are both assured of a top five finish.

The Ravens were held to a goalless draw at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds by a now safe Goole AFC, while the Nottingham outfit beat a Daventry Town side who are dropping out of the division voluntarily with goals from Ruben Wiggins-Thomas from the spot after 18 minutes and then from open play three minutes after the break, and Kyle Dixon on 61 minutes – Jetmir Esso netting a late consolation for the visitors.

Who joins them in the play-offs is between current occupants Lincoln United, Chasetown and Rugby Town.

Lincoln won 4-0 at Ashby Avenue against Newcastle Town, with Sean Wright on 37 minutes and then second half strikes from Rob Norris, Matt Cotton and Jack McGovern while the Scholars drew 1-1 at Spalding United, whose Neal Spafford had them in front after five minutes before Danny Edwards levelled just before the break.

Rugby stayed in the hunt after a 2-0 Butlin Road win over Sheffield FC, courtesy of goals from Callum Powell and a Ben Turner own goal.

Who goes down with Daventry? Tividale have been bottom for a large part of the season but are just about still alive after beating the only other side who they could overtake, Loughborough Dynamo, 3-2.

Chris Sterling had Tivi in front five minutes before the break. Jamie Clarke equalised on 66 minutes, only for Shane Grainger to restore the home side`s lead 10 minutes from time. Bamoussa Cisse levelled two minutes later before Shaquille Leachman-Whittingham grabbed a lifeline for Tividale five minutes from time.

Kidsgrove Athletic shared a 1-1 draw with neighbours Leek Town, Anthony Malbon cancelling out Jonathan Beaumont`s 17th minute opener for Leek a minute from time.

Gresley FC edged out Belper Town 2-1, thanks to a Jack Langston penalty and a Jack O`Brien own goal – Ben Watkins scoring two minutes from time for the Nailers.

It finished 4-4 at Bracken Moor between Stocksbridge Park Steels and Romulus with both sides scoring in stoppage time to cancel out any hopes of a late winner for either, Liam McFadyen grabbing the home side's leveller four minutes into stoppage and time and only two after Malachi Farquharson had struck. Earlier, Joe Lumsdenm Scott Ruthven and Rory Coleman had scored for Steels before the break with Ben Welsh, Barry Fitzharris and Luke Keen replying for the Roms.
