Saturday's First Division South action review

By David Watters

Despite drawing with Basford on Saturday, the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South title is back in the hands of leaders Stafford Rangers after second-placed Shaw Lane Aquaforce were also held at home, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

In front of a crowd of 1,250 at Marston Road, Rangers can count themselves very fortunate as Basford, already assured of a top five finish in their first season at this level, had two penalties saved!

It looked as though the news from Barnsley wasn`t going to good either as Shaw Lane were leading with goals from Rhys Meynell after 20 minutes and Adam Priestley on 50 minutes after Joe Woolley had equalised on 14 minutes.

But a stoppage time Andy Kinsey leveller earned Grove a point to leave Shaw Lane needing to win both their remaining games and hope Rangers don`t pick anything up from their final match at third-placed Coalville Town.

The Ravens also dropped two points in a 1-1 draw at Carlton Town, whose Danny Gordon equalised 17 minutes from time after Nathan Watson had given the visitors a 49th minute lead.

The final play-off spot is now a straight battle between Lincoln United and Chasetown

Lincoln won 2-1 at Coles Lane against Romulus, Sean Wright putting them in front after 18 minutes and then Matt Cotton winning it on 66 minutes after Jake Donnelly had levelled on 24 minutes.

Chasetown ended any slim hopes Rugby Town had of sneaking into the top five with a 3-1 home win in which Paul Sullivan bagged a brace on 34 and 67 minutes and James Dance added a third 10 minutes later – all after Steve Towers had given Valley a 33rd minute lead.

Elsewhere, Neal Spafford`s 89th minute effort sealed a 1-0 win for Spalding United at Newcastle Town, while Gresley FC hit seven without reply at a soon to be demoted Daventry Town with John Guy and Martim Smyth both netting hat-tricks and Ryan King the other.

Bradley Wells after 17 minutes and Alex Steadman in injury-time at the end of the game earned Belper Town three points at Christchurch Meadow against Market Drayton Town.

At Harrison Park, Tim Grice bagged a brace after Omar Haughton`s third minute opener to seal Leek Town`s 3-1 victory over already-doomed Tividale, whose Shaq Leachman-Whittingham replied on 76 minutes.

Third-bottom Loughborough Dynamo conceded five at home to Stocksbridge Park Steels, for whom Scott Ruthven bagged a brace and Adam Hinchliffe, Joe Lumsden and Rory Coleman singles – all in the second half after Eddy Samba`s fifth minute opener had led at the break.

Nick Guest gave Goole AFC a ninth minute lead at Sheffield FC, whose Brian Cusworth after 15 minutes and Ross Goodwin a minute before the break turned it in their favour.
