Saturday's First Division South action review

By David Watters

Stafford Rangers won the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South championship by the narrowest of margins on Saturday after Shaw Lane Aquaforce pushed them all the way, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Rangers clinched the title and promotion to the NPL's top flight next season by taking the point they needed from a 1-1 at Owen Street with Coalville Town on the final day of the campaign.

Christian Dacres gave the visitors a 19th minute lead that Cameron Powell cancelled out with 15 minutes to go, but Stafford held on, much to the joy of a large chunk of the 807 crowd.

Shaw Lane Aquaforce`s tremendous season finished with a 2-1 win at Butlin Road against Rugby Town just in case of any slip up by Rangers.

Jonathan Wafula after 40 minutes and Gavin Allott on the hour-mark for Shaw Lane and Jake Healy three minutes from time for the hosts were the scorers.

Shaw Lane will host a Lincoln United side who shared a goalless draw at home to Chasetown in the play-offs next week, while Coalville will play host to Basford United, another team to have done tremendously well this season.

However, Basford lost 1-0 at home to Romulus in their last league game before the play-offs, Mark Branch scoring the decisive seventh minute goal.

Daventry Town, who had already announced they were dropping out of the league, finished in a relegation spot anyway.

They were beaten 4-0 at Market Drayton Town, for whom Paul McMullen, Cohen Bramall, a Josh Green penalty and James O`Neill were all on target.

Third-bottom Loughborough Dynamo shared a 3-3 draw at neighbouring Gresley FC, coming back from being 2-0 down to Martin Smyth and Ryan King goals to lead through Lee Potts, Eddy Samba and Jamie Clarke before boss Gary Ricketts rescued the Moatmen.

It was a similar scoreline at Kidsgrove Athletic against Carlton Town, who were the team to lead 2-0 through Kevin Lusamba and Antonio Wedderburn.

Anthony Malbon`s brace pulled Grove level and then Daniel Gordon restored Carlton`s lead on 67 minutes, only for Jordan Johnson to equalise two minutes later.

Newcastle Town`s Harry Clayton netted a hat-trick and Neville Thompson a brace as they won 5-0 at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds against Goole AFC, while Sheffield FC won 2-0 at basement side Tividale, thanks to Brian Cusworth and Alec Denton.

Stocksbridge Park Steels edged Belper Town 2-1 at Bracken Moor with Rory Coleman`s sixth minute opener being cancelled out by Alex Steadman on the hour-mark, only for Coleman to bag his second from the spot 18 minutes from time.

Chris Baker popped up with a stoppage time equaliser for Leek Town at Spalding United, who led through a 69th minute Nathan Stainfield effort.
