Evo-Stik NPL First Division South

Belper Town and Sutton Coldfield Town were the only two of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League's First Division South's top five to take the field on Saturday – and they played against each other in a programme hit hard by the weather with four games off, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

And the Nailers' win by the odd goal in seven on the 3G at Coles Lane took them above their hosts and into third place in the table. Mark Ward gave the visitors an eighth minute lead that Joel Kettle cancelled out within two minutes.

Danny White restored Belper's lead on the quarter-hour mark, only for Mark Danks to pull the Royals back on terms again four minutes before half-time. A minute into the second period Reece Leek gave the home side the lead for the first time, but a Joe Lyng own goal on 58 minutes and a Jon Froggatt penalty four minutes later won it for the Nailers.

Scarborough Athletic's push towards the top five took a blow when they were beaten 3-1 at Queensgate by Sutton Coldfield's tenants, Romulus.

A crowd of 526 saw Lee Smith on the half-hour mark and Craig Marshall eight minutes later give the Roms a surprise 2-0 interval lead. A minute from the end of normal time Ryan Blott gave Boro hope but that was extinguished a minute later when Dan O'Callaghan made it 3-1. The Roms are now ninth, only four points behind fifth-placed Coalville Town.

Newcastle Town moved level on points with Scarborough after edging out hosts Rainworth Miners Welfare, who could have gone level with their visitors had they won.

Luke Askey gave Castle the breakthrough right on half-time. But a Leon Ashman own goal pulled the Wrens back on terms on 66 minutes, only for Tim Sanders to win it for the visitors in injury-time.

Bottom-markers Eastwood Town found themselves 3-0 down at The Scholars against Chasetown with three goals in six minutes from the 12th minute, courtesy of Tesfa Robinson, Simon Brown and Ramone Stephens. The home side had Lee Butler sent-off after 30 minutes but all the Badgers could manage in response against the ten-men was a 54th minute Anthony Gregory effort.

Second-bottom Kidsgrove Athletic lost by the odd goal in five at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds to Goole AFC.

The Vikings raced into a 2-0 lead with goals from Ben Good after 11 minutes and James Cottingham after 36. But the strugglers battled back to level through Aiden Matranga on 68 minutes and Jordan Johnson on 79, only for Aaron Richards to win it for David Holdsworth`s side five minutes from time.

The other game played on Saturday saw Market Drayton Town edge out visitors Sheffield FC by the odd goal in five.

Rob Stevenson gave the hosts an early sixth minute lead. And that was the only goal until 15 minutes from time when Andy Gascoigne equalised. Joel Purkiss put Club in front with seven minutes remaining, only for James Askey and Martyn Davies to win it for Drayton in the final two minutes.
