Saturday's First North action review

By David Watters

It was not a particularly good opening day to the 2016-17 EVO-STIK Northern Premier League First Division North season for the division's newcomers, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Both promoted teams Colne and Tadcaster Albion were beaten 2-0., the former losing at home to Glossop North End, whose Max Leonard after four minutes and Karl Jones immediately after the break, were the scorers.

Taddy lost 2-0 at Ewen Fields against relegated Hyde United, for whom Phil Dean after six minutes and Chris Amadi four minutes into the second half, were on target.

Title-fancied Colwyn Bay opened up with a 1-0 defeat at Throstle Nest to Farsley Celtic, for whom Aiden Savory was the hero on 65 minutes.

Ramsbottom United, who came down with Bay and Hyde, were 3-1 winners at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium.

Nia Bayunu after 10 minutes and a Darren Green brace after 31 and then 84 minutes - two minutes after Sam Robinson had pulled the Vikings back into the game – sealed Rammy`s win.

Droyslden started the new season positively, winning 3-1 at the Giant Axe against Lancaster City with Liam Caddick bagging a second half brace after Lloyd Ellams had cancelled out Richard Mercer`s eighth minute opener for the Dolly Blues four minutes later.

Trafford were the day`s biggest winners with a 4-0 home victory over Burscough.

Aaron Burns on 38 minutes, Mark Derbyshire three minutes later and then Kyle Jacobs on 57 minutes and Craig Robinson three minutes after that were their marksmen.

Brighouse Town and Prescot Cables were the other opening day winners.

Brighouse won 2-0 at home to Radcliffe Borough, thanks to a Reece Lyndon own goal after just two minutes and then a Luke Parkin penalty 19 minutes from time.

Cables won by the same scoreline at Valerie Park against Ossett Town with a Rob Doran spot-kick after 27 minutes and James Edgar 15 minutes from time being the scorers.

Ossett Albion found themselves 2-0 down at Dimple Wells to Clitheroe, whose Kury Willoughby after 29 minutes and Dimitri Tuanzebe on 62 minutes, were on the mark.

But Ben Walker on 69 minutes and then Connor Brunt five minutes from time salvaged a point for the hosts.

It was goalless at Queensgate between Scarborough Athletic and Bamber Bridge, while Andy Keogh bagged a brace, including an 87th minute equaliser for Mossley AFC at Seel Park against Kendal Town, for whom Oliver Wood on 43 minutes and Sam Bailey from the spot nine minutes later were on target.
