Saturday's First North action review

By David Watters

Brighouse Town still head the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division North table despite being held to a goalless draw at Colne on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Bamber Bridge blew their chance of taking over top spot when they suffered a 4-1 defeat at their own Sir Tom Finney Stadium against a Clitheroe side who are now fifth.

Tom Williams gave the visiting Blues an early fifth minute lead that Jamie Milligan cancelled out from the penalty spot eight minutes later.

Alex Newby then took over for Brig`s Lancashire rivals, going on to complete a hat-trick with goals in the 24th, 64th and then 77th minutes – the triple completed from the spot.

Glossop North End moved above Brig into second after a 2-1 home win over Colwyn Bay.

Glossop took the lead with a Mike Norton header on 29 minutes. The Seagulls hit back, however, and equalised on 37 minutes through Scott Bakkor.

However, Bakkor went from hero to villain when he received a red card 6 minutes into the second half for two bookings. Bay looked to have held out for a point, until Max Leonard broke away to snatch victory for the Hillmen deep into added time.

Scarborough Athletic complete the top five and they were best-of-five winners against Ramsbottom United at Queensgate.

The sides swapped early goals as Grant Spencer put Rammy in front in the second minute only for Benny Igiehon to respond almost straight from the restart.

Cameron Murray then gave Boro the lead three minutes after half-time, but Ryan Salmon restored parity just shy of the hour-mark. But Carl Stewart won it for Boro in the 64th minute.

Farsley Celtic re level on points with Scarborough after they won 3-0 at Valerie Park against Prescot Cables.

Lewis Nightingale opened the visitors` account after 17 minute and just before the break, James Walshaw doubled their lead. Paul Walker made sure with a third 11 minutes from time.

Lancaster City also have twenty-two points but suffered a surprise 2-0 defeat at the Giant Axe by Ossett Town, whose Ashley Jackson bagged a brace in the final 13 minutes – the second of which came from the spot.

Tadcaster Albion and Kendal Town are both just a point behind and they met in Yorkshire, with the Cumbrians coming out on top thanks to a Sam Bailey double in the sixth and 37th minutes. Andy Milne replied two minutes from time, but defeat meant the end of Taddy`s unbeaten home record.

Ossett Albion moved out of the bottom two after a good 2-0 Dimple Wells win over Radcliffe Borough, thanks to James Eyles after 14 minutes and Nick Matthews four minutes before the break.

Trafford are now eleventh after stunning Mossley AFC 4-1 at Seel Park.

The visitors, who hadn`t won in four, fell behind after just four minutes to a Tom Pratt effort. Lee Neville pulled Trafford back on terms after 22 minutes but it was the second half when they found their form.

Craig Robinson put them in front just past the hour-mark and then a brace from Aaron Burns in the 75th and 90th minutes sealed the 4-1 verdict.

Droylsden moved up the lower end of the table after beating a now second-bottom Goole AFC 3-1 at the Butcher`s Arms.

Domaine Rouse gave the Bloods a 20th minute lead that Curtly Martin-Wyatt cancelled out from the spot 6 minutes later. But then Liam Caddick on 63 minutes and substitute Steve Lewis on 73 minutes won it for the hosts.

Droylsden`s Tameside neighbours Hyde United are level on points with the Bloods after edging out bottom-markers and still win-less Burscough by the odd goal in five at Ewen Fields.

Danny Pilkington put the Tigerrs in front after 19 minutes, only for Conor Smith and Liam Davies to turn the game in the Linnets` favour with two goals in two minutes midway through the half. Ayrton Bevins equalised just before the hour-mark and then former Southport player boss Andy Bishop popped up with Hyde`s winner in the very last minute.
