Saturday's First South action review

Evo-Stik NPL First Division South

On a Saturday when the fixture list was reduced due to the FA Cup, Leek Town took full advantage to move seven points clear at the top of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League's First Division South table, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Leek won 2-1 at Harrison Park against much-improved Goole AFC, who took a 25th minute lead through Jason Yates. The Vikings held that lead until 18 minutes from time when Jordan Johnson equalised and then Danny Smith won it for Lee Casswell's side with just two minutes remaining to stretch their lead at the top.

Managerless Bedworth United and Eastwood Town both suffered defeats with the Greenbacks going down to a 3-1 home defeat to Sheffield FC, whose Zeph Thomas gave them an early sixth minute lead. Simeon Williams levelled seven minutes later, but Club went on to win with goals from Warren Burrell on 26 minutes and Andy Gascoigne just past the hour-mark.

The Badgers lost by the same scoreline at Kidsgrove Athletic, despite taking a first-minute lead through Kieran Wells. Matty Haddrell equalised on the quarter-hour mark and then Karl Espley on 54 minutes and Tom Wakefield three minutes from time completed Grove's win.

Michael Jacklin's 40th minute header proved enough to earn Brigg Town their first home win of the season against visiting Romulus, who are fifth. The victory wasn't enough to lift the Zebras off the bottom of the table but did at least move Brigg level on points with Bedworth and within touching distance of a host of other teams.

Newcastle Town completed a comfortable 4-1 win at the Lyme Valley Stadium against Market Drayton Town, taking an early fourth minute lead and then doubling it right on half-time.

Cole added his second and Castle's third seven minutes after the break and after a Leon Ashman own goal had reduced the deficit 12 minutes from time, Nathan Sutton added the hosts' fourth in time added on.

Lincoln United took an eight minute lead at Ashby Avenue against Chasetown only for the Scholars to level within two minutes through Andy Westwood. On-loan Danny Griffiths won it for the visitors with a 75th minute debut effort.
