Saturday's First South action review

By David Watters

Spalding United took over as leaders of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South table on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Tulips won 3-2 at Market Drayton Town, going three-up through Sam Downey after six minutes, Andy Wright after 16 minutes and Bradley Wells five minutes after the break.

Danny Beddows on 57 minutes and then a Josh Green effort deep into stoppage time made the scoreline look closer than it should have done.

It was an emotional day at Shaw Lane AFC as they hosted Romulus as tributes were paid to the passing of the home side`s Daniel Wilkinson last week.

And Shaw Lane overcame their grief to dedicate a 2-0 win to their former team-mate, courtesy of goals at either end of the game from Alex Byrne and Spencer Harris.

Surprisingly, Northwich Victoria are still to win since being switched from the northern section where they made the play-offs.

The Vics` fourth defeat in seven came at now third-placed Newcastle Town, who took a 34th minute lead through Jacob Lovatt.

Jordan Cole added Castle`s second midway through the second half, rendering Callum Hill`s 84th minute reply as just a consolation.

Sheffield FC doubled their win tally for the season to date by beating Leek Town 2-1 at home with goals from Alex Denton on the half-hour mark and Lee Cooksey 10 minutes later – all after Tim Grice had given the visitors a 25th minute lead.

Josh Rae gave Carlton Town the lead on the half-hour mark at Bracken Moor against Stocksbridge Park Steels but the hosts won it, thanks to Kudakwashe Muskwe on 33 minutes and Joe Lumsden six minutes after the break.

Basford United won 2-1 at Loughborough Dynamo to leap-frog their hosts into eighth place.

Mason Rowley gave the Nottingham outfit a 28th minute lead. But it wasn`t until eight minutes from time that Kyle Dixon cancelled out Jamie Clarke`s equaliser to win it for the visitors.
