Saturday's First South action review

By David Watters

Long-time leaders Basford United clinched promotion from the EVO-STIK League South on Saturday but were held to a 1-1 draw by second-placed Avechurch, meaning they can`t quite celebrate winning the title just yet, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

A third-best league gate of 254 saw Rob Duffy break the deadlock to give Basford a 65th minute lead, only for `Church to respond within a minute through Babucar Sauane.

Bedworth United are level on points with Alvechurch in third but have played three more games. They beat bottom side Romulus 2-1 at Coles Lane with second half goals from Alex Troke and Iyseden Christie after Yohan Rutty-Smith had given Roms a 14th minute lead.

Frickley Athletic are fourth and were in spectacular form at Christchurch Meadow against mid-table Belper Town, running in six without reply.

Jacob Hazel bagged a first half brace with Danny Burns adding another to take a 3-0 interval lead. Hazel completed his hat-trick with Nicky Darker and Tom Dugdale finishing off the rout.

Stamford AFC and Leek Town occupy the other two play-off spots, with Chasetown level on points with the latter in seventh and with games in hand.

The Daniels shared a goalless draw at the Sir Halley Stewart Fields in the derby with Spalding United, while Leek won 4-0 at lowly Sheffield FC, courtesy of Tim Grice and Rob Stevenson in the first half and Dan Trickett-Smith and Mat Bailey in the second.

The Scholars suffered a 2-1 defeat at Steel Park against Corby Town, who may just have left it too late to make the top six themselves.

After Chris Baker had given Chasetown an 11th minute lead, Jake Bettles` brace on 64 and 80 minutes turned the game in the Steelmen`s favour.

Andy Toyne’s last-gasp penalty at Stocksbridge Park Steels was Lincoln United’s 73rd league goal this season. That takes United past the previous best of 72 scored two seasons ago. It wasn`t enough for a win though as Steels had led through Joe Lumsden`s 21st minute opener.

Market Drayton Town and Gresley FC ensured bottom side Romulus still have hope after both lost, leaving the gap at the foot of the table only three points.

Drayton lost 3-1 at Loughborough Dynamo, whose Sam Thorpe, Jack Andrews and Josh Riley outgunned Glynn Coney, while the Moatmen lost 3-0 at home to another side in the bottom half, Kidsgrove Athletic, for whom Lee Cropper, Jon Beaumont and Tim Sanders were on the mark.

Elsewhere, Peterborough Sports achieved arguably one of their best wins of the season to beat Cleethorpes Town 2-1 on their travels, courtesy of second half goals from Richard Jones and a Lewis Hilliard penalty, after Brody Robertson had given Clee a 34th minute lead.

Carlton Town were 3-1 home winners against Newcastle Town in the day's other game in which Luke Askey's 29th minute opener for the visitors was overturned by second half strikes from Ben Hutchinson, Tyler Blake and Ed Schoenecker.
