However, Matlock Town were Saturday`s biggest winners, hitting four without reply at the DCJ Group Insurance Arena against Lancaster City.
Shaun Harrad`s penalty on the half-hour mark set Matlock up and running. He hit his and the Gladiators` second after 58 minutes and Kieran Watson made the points safe with a third on 79 minutes. Jamie Jackson`s fourth goal five minutes from time ensured it was Matlock`s biggest ever opening day victory in the Northern Premier League.
A terrific crowd of 1,677 at Mariners Park saw promoted South Shields start off well with a 2-1 win against Witton Albion.
Carl Finnigan`s goal right on the stroke of half-time gave Shields confidence, only for James Foley to stun the majority in the crowd when he levelled from the penalty spot just two minutes after the break. But Finnigan`s second of the game with 8 minutes remaining sent the majority home happy.
Scarborough, who came up with Shields, started with a 1-0 win at Keys Park against Hednesford Town, an early ninth minute Wayne Brooksby goal settling the opening day`s enocunter in visiting Boro`s favour.
New-look Gainsborough Trinity, relegated from the Vanarama National League North, lost their opener 1-0 at the Weaver Stadium to Nantwich Town, whose veteran Steve Jones popped up with the only goal in stoppage time.
North Ferriby United, who came down with Trinity, earned a useful point from a 1-1 draw at the Marine Travel Arena against Marine AFC, Luke Lofts` 42nd minute effort having Ferriby in front until the 79th minute when Craig Carney equalised.
Hyde United and Basford United – two promoted teams – met at Ewen Fields and a goal from former Harrogate Town striker Chib Chilaka seven minutes into the second half earned the Tigers the points.
Adam Gell's return to Whitby Town colours got off to a successful start as he scored the only goal after 23 minutes at the Turnbull Ground as the Seasiders saw off Buxton, while Jason Walker`s goal five minutes after the break was eventually enough for Workington AFC at Borough Park against Stafford Rangers.
Fancied Warrington Town went down 2-0 at home to last season`s play-off semi-finalists Farsley Celtic, Nathan Turner giving the visitors a 13th minute lead that Will Hayhurst doubled eight minutes before half-time.
The two other matches ended in draws – Stalybridge Celtic and Mickleover Sports couldn`t find a goal between them at Bower Fold.
Ryan White gave promoted Bamber Bridge the lead two minutes into the second half at The Meres against Grantham Town but Cenk Akar earned the Gingerbreads a point 10 minutes later.
