Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Saturday`s round of matches in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division saw both Blyth Spartans and Salford City hold on to their unbeaten starts to the new season, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

However, Spartans, the fledgling table`s early leaders, dropped their first points of the campaign after being held to a 1-1 draw at Croft Park by Nantwich Town.

A crowd of just under 500 saw Robbie Dale break the deadlock to give the home side the lead on the hour-mark. But nine minutes later veteran Steve Jones pulled the Dabbers back on level terms.

Salford, one of only six winners on a day of draws, condemned Buxton to a second defeat of the season to date by winning 2-0 at Silverlands.

Luke Clark gave the Ammies a 24th minute lead that Scott Burton eventually added to six minutes after the break.

Darlington 1883 recovered from last week`s defeat at Workington AFC by securing a 4-2 victory at Llanellian Road against relegated Colwyn Bay.

Kevin Burgess gave the Quakers a 22nd minute lead that was doubled 10 minutes later by Alan White who made it 3-0 a minute before half-time.

Valter Fernandez reduced the arrears 10 minutes after the break, only for Dave Dowson to restore the visitors` three-goal advantage on 69 minutes. Chris Sharp then pulled a second back for Bay with 12 minutes to go but the Quakers firmed up to secure the points.

Halesowen Town won for the first time since the opening day of the season by beating Workington 2-0 at The Grove.

Greg Pearson put the Yeltz into an early eighth minute lead. And victory was virtually assured when Isaac Cooper made it 2-0 with 17 minutes remaining.

Stamford AFC, who beat Halesowen last week for their first win, made it back-to-back victories with an amazing 5-3 win at the Turnbull Ground against Whitby Town.

It was all-square at 2-2 at half-time - Gregg Smith and Ryan Robbins for the Daniels and a Scott McCarthy brace for the Seasiders. But Andy Hall on 50 minutes and Jordan Smith on 70 minutes stretched Stamford`s lead to 4-2.

Two goals in stoppage time – Lee Mason for the hosts and new signing Nathan Hicks for the visitors – saw the final outcome 5-3.

Frickley Athletic made it two wins in five days as they beat yet-to-win Ramsbottom United 2-0 at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium, goals from Zeph Thomas after 15 minutes and Tyler Williams 10 minutes from time seeing the Blues home.

Stourbridge won for a second time this season, beating Skelmersdale United 2-1 at Stormy Corner.

Leon Broadhurst bagged a brace for the Glassboys in the 20th and then the 70th minutes. Danny Mitchley reduced the deficit from the penalty spot with 16 minutes to go but the visitors held on for the points.

Apart from Rammy, Sutton Coldfield Town and Grantham Town are the other teams yet to win this season.

Sutton Coldfield picked up a very good point from a 1-1 draw at the New Manor Ground against fourth-placed Ilkeston FC.

Sam Bell gave the Royals the lead just before half-time but Marcus Harness equalised on the hour-mark.

Grantham also earned a third draw in five games, sharing a six-goal thriller at The Meres against Ashton United.

Ben Saunders gave the Gingerbreads a great start with an opening goal after just two minutes. But Ashton looked to have won the game when they went 3-1 up with goals from Chris Baguley after 37 minutes, Dale Johnson after 63 minutes and then Martin Pilkington in the 84th minute.

Grantham then produced a stunning fightback to pull level with goals in the 89th minute from Liam Read from the spot and in injury-time from Michael Hollingsworth.

Hyde United and Matlock Town shared a 2-2 draw at Ewen Fields where Sam Fitton put the Tigers in front 2 minutes before half-time.

Niall McManus equalised three minutes after the break and then Harry Coates put the Gladiators in front seven minutes later before Scott Spencer earned a point for the home side 15 minutes from time.

Luke Benbow put Rushall Olympic in front after 28 minutes at Dales Lane against Mickleover Sports but the visitors` earned a share of the spoils through Jack Broadhead eight minutes after half-time.

And at Kirkby Road, a Brady Hickey own goal gave visiting Marine AFC a 27th minute lead against hosts Barwell but the Leicestershire outfit equalised 16 minutes from time through Alex Tomkinson.
