Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

The wet weather caused the postponement of a couple of Saturday`s matches in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division but it couldn't dampen the action elsewhere, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Darlington 1883`s chances of returning to the top were foiled by the weather as their home game against Buxton was called off as was Skelmersdale United`s game at the appropriately-named Stormy Corner against Ilkeston FC.

Nantwich Town and Workington AFC were the days biggest movers.

The Dabbers moved to within two points of leaders Blyth Spartans, who had no game, after recording a comfortable 4-0 win at the Zeeco Stadium against second-bottom Stamford AFC.

The managerless Daniels fell behind to a Mat Bailey effort in the first half and then Elliot Osborne on 49 minutes, Josh Gordon on 77 minutes and Lewis Short three minutes from time sealing a good win for the visitors.

Workington were always going to play on Sutton Coldfield Town`s Coles Lane 3G and they made the most of it, returning to Cumbria with all three points from a 2-0 win, courtesy of Matty Tymon after seven minutes and Jacob Simpson nine minutes later.

Ashton United are sixth after recording a 3-1 win at Mickleover Sports.

Jeff King gave the visitors` a 12th minute lead that Martin Pilkington doubled three minutes later. Pilkington added Ashton`s third with 11 minutes of the first half remaining but Sports `won` the second half with a Jake Bennett effort just past the hour-mark.

Ramsbottom United won for only the second time this season, 2-1 at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium against Rushall Olympic.

A 24th minute Mitch Tolley own goal set Rammy up and running. Luke Benbow equalised nine minutes into the second half but the home side won it six minutes from time, thanks to Shelton Payne.

Matlock Town took advantage of some poor defending by visiting Frickley Athletic to take the three points.

Two first half goals from Joel Purkiss on 27 and 36 minutes put Matlock in control. And Sebastian Malkowski's poor clearance gifted the home side`s Niall McManus a third goal in stoppage time at the end of the game.

Marine AFC pulled six points clear of the danger zone after a 2-1 win at home against third-bottom Whitby Town.

Liam Willis gave the Mariners` a great start with a goal inside the opening minute. Andy Owens added a second with only 12 minutes gone on the clock. The Mariners were unable to force home their advantage and in the end the Seasiders caused a nervy final six minutes after Ryan Brobbel reduced the deficit.

Grantham Town moved above Whitby to fourth-bottom after a 2-0 win against Hyde United at The Meres.

Gregg Smith gave the Gingerbreads the breakthrough after 76 minutes. And three minutes from time, Danny Meadows made sure with a second from the spot.

Grantham are now just a point behind Colwyn Bay after the North Wales side were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Halesowen Town.

This was another game where the crowd had to wait until the final 15 minutes for the first goal to arrive, and it came from Bay`s John Marsden. But less than three minutes from time, Reece Hales grabbed the Yeltz`s equaliser.
