Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Premier Division leaders Nantwich Town suffered a 4-2 defeat at Ashton United on Saturday but second-placed Blyth Spartans were also beaten, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

And with Darlington 1883`s game being one of two postponed – the other being at Buxton – Salford City were the day`s biggest movers, slipping into third spot after a hard-earned 1-0 win at Moor Lane against second-bottom Stamford AFC.

Ashton moved into the top five after beating the Dabbers at Hurst Cross. And they had to come back from being a 48th minute Liam Shotton goal down to win.

Martin Pilkington`s leveller arrived just three minutes later and new boy Ed Toner on 66 minutes and Matty Chadwick four minutes from time, stretched the home side`s lead to 3-1.

Steve Jones caused a few nerves to jangle when he reduced the deficit to just one in the 88th minutes, only for Chadwick to notch his second of the game in injury-time to make it 4-2.

Blyth got off to a great start at Stormy Corner when Michael Richardson gave them a ninth minute lead against Skelmersdale United.

But Tony Rendell equalised in the 24th minute and 10 minutes later Ged Kinsella scored Skem`s second - a goal that eventually proved to be enough to take all three points.

A crowd of 1,311 were at Moor Lane to see what many must have thought would be a comfortable win for Salford against the struggling Daniels.

But the Ammies were really made to work hard for the points which came courtesy of a goal seconds before half-time from the on-loan Tom Peers.

Ilkeston FC returned to winning ways by beating Hyde United and are now in sixth spot, level on points with fifth-placed Ashton United.

Lee Ndlovu broke the deadlock in the 55th minute and Dan Udoh made it 2-0 just seven minutes later.

The visitors pulled a goal back through Ben Jago two minutes from time but Udoh added a second in stoppage time to seal a 3-1 win for the Robins.

Halesowen Town have quietly moved into seventh place, also level on 32 points with Ashton and Ilkeston, after beating bottom-markers Ramsbottom United at The Grove.

The Yeltz were made to work hard for the points, however, as it was 0-0 at half-time.

Reece Hales finally broke the deadlock to put Halesowen in front on 58 minutes, only for Shelton Payne to level from the spot within two minutes. But eight minutes from time Keyon Reffell won it for the Yeltz.

Stourbridge earned a 3-1 win at Marine AFC but not without some nervous moments in the closing stages.

Karl Hawley's ninth minute goal put the Glassboys ahead and Tom Tonks doubled the advantage just before the interval with his first goal for the club.

Stourbridge continued to hold the upper hand after the break but Chad Whyte's 75th minute strike induced some late pressure from the home side. However, Hawley's second of the game, deep into added time, ensured that there would be no sting in the tail.

Frickley Athletic extended their unbeaten run to four matches as they were forced to settle for a point after being pegged back by Workington AFC in the second half.

John Cyrus headed the Blues in front after just seven minutes but Gareth Arnison came off the bench to equalise for the Reds in the 58th minute. Both teams had chances to win the game but a draw was probably a fair result.

Mickleover Sports celebrated breaking a twelve-game win-less sequence by beating third-bottom visitors Whitby Town 1-0, on-loan Anthony O'Neil Dwyer scoring the only goal of the game in the final minute of normal time at the Raygar Stadium.

Colwyn Bay are fourth-bottom after losing 2-1 at home against Rushall Olympic.

The Pics took a 16th minute lead through Luke Benbow and eventually added to that with a strike from Alex Reid on 67 minutes. John Marsden`s penalty 10 minutes from time gave Bay hope, but the visitors held firm for the spoils.

Matlock Town shared a 2-2 home draw with Sutton Coldfield Town, who missed a late penalty that would have seen them win the game.

Joel Purkiss put the Gladiators 1-0 up after just four minutes but the visitors levelled through Luke Rodgers eight minutes later.

The Royals then went 2-1 up a minute before the break through new signing Ryan Edmunds before Ted Cribley equalised just past the hour-mark.
