Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Blyth Spartans comprehensively moved twelve points clear at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division on Saturday with a 5-1 win over Hednesford Town at Croft Park, writes Steve Whitney.

In front of a crowd of 601, Jarrett Rivers gave the hosts the boost of an early second minute lead. Rivers doubled his and Spartans` tally 14 minutes later, although Vinny Mukendi pulled the Pitmen back into the contest in the 24th minute.

But after Luke Armstrong made it 3-1 in the 56th minute, there looked to be only one winner, with Robbie Dale on 69 minutes and Daniel Maguire 15 minutes from time making it a nap hand for the hosts.

Stourbridge lost second spot after Grantham Town made it sixteen games unbeaten and fifth place after they ran out deserved winners at The Meres.

Lee Shaw stretched out a leg to divert a right wing cross past Matt Gould two minutes into the second half to give the Gingerbreads the lead, and then Harry Clifton volleyed in a second shortly after the hour-mark to leave Stourbridge facing an uphill battle. Substitute Jake Heath netted a late consolation, blasting through a crowd of players in stoppage time.

Whitby Town took full advantage of the Glassboys defeat to return to second place after a 4-1 win at the Marine Travel Arena against Marine AFC.

The Seasiders got off to a great start when Dave Carson put them ahead inside two minutes. However, it wasn’t until eight minutes into the second period that the visitors bagged a second from Matty Tymon.

Craig Lindfield reduced the deficit to one on 67 minutes, only for Carson to restore Whitby`s two-goal cushion less than two minutes later, with Tymon also grabbing a second six minutes from time to make it 4-1.

Nantwich Town maintained fourth place but they had to make do with a point from a 1-1 draw at Coles Lane against third-bottom Sutton Coldfield Town.

Both goals came in a two minute spell early on, with Sean Geddes` sixth minute penalty being quickly cancelled out by Joel Stair a couple of minutes later.

Workington AFC are sixth, level on points with fifth-placed Grantham, after a 3-1 Borough Park victory over mid-table Warrington Town.

After a goalless opening 45 minutes, the Reds broke the deadlock eight minutes after the restart through a Dave Symington spot-kick. Conor Tinnion then bagged a brace in the 65th and 79th minutes, rendering Dylan Vassallo`s 88th minute reply as just a consolation for the Wire.

Rushall Olympic`s top five hopes took a blow as visiting Matlock Town drew level on points with the Pics after winning 3-2 at Dales Lane.

Aaron Forde had the home side ahead in the 37th minute from the spot, only for Adam Yates to take the Gladiators into the break all-square with an equaliser a minute before the whistle.

Luke Bottomer restored the Pics lead on 66 minutes, but once again Matlock responded with Ted Cribley`s leveller four minutes later. And then a minute from time, loanee Marcus Dinanga grabbed the visitors` winner.

It turned out to be a bad day for new Skelmersdale United boss Alan Rogers as his side lost 2-1 to slip a massive 15 points adrift of the safety-mark following Corby Town`s fourth successive win which took them out of the bottom four.

Skem lost 2-1 at Stormy Corner against Halesowen Town, who are now nine points clear of the drop zone.

Liam Slade broke the deadlock to give the Yeltz a 57th minute lead that Ethan Delaney added to in the 73rd minute. Dean Shacklock netted an 88th minute consolation for the hosts.

A crowd of 408 braved the cold at Steel Park to see Corby win 1-0 against Mickleover Sports, courtesy of a 69th minute Ben Milnes effort.

Elsewhere, Barwell beat Ashton United 4-1 at Kirkby Road, racing into a 3-0 lead by the 35th minute with goals from Luke Barlone in the sixth minute, Brady Hickey after 23 minutes and then a Callum Ball penalty on 35 minutes.

Declan Towers added the Canaries` fourth on 71 minutes, with Lee Knight netting a consolation for United 6 minutes later.

In contrast, Barwell`s Leicestershire neighbours Coalville Town couldn`t find a single goal as they shared a 0-0 draw with Stafford Rangers at Owen Street.
