Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

A crazy game at the War Memorial Ground on Saturday saw Stourbridge emerge triumphant against play-off chasing Matlock Town and return to second place in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Premier Division table, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Darryl Westlake put Stourbridge ahead as early as the third minute, thundering his shot into the top corner from fully 30 yards. But Matlock were level after seven minutes through Mark Newsham's looping header.

Luke Benbow restored the Glassboy's lead on 10 minutes with another 30-yarder - this time direct from a free-kick - and Jordan Archer grabbed a third with just 16 minutes played, slamming home the loose ball from an Ethan Jones's shot.

The lively Marcus Dinanga then got behind the Glassboys defence on 22 minutes to score, only for Jones to again put Stourbridge two goals clear just four minutes later. Dinanga then broke clear again with 36 minutes gone to win and score from the spot, his fifth goal in two matches against the Glassboys this season reducing the arrears again.

After both sides tightened their defences at the break, Tom Tonks finally wrapped the game up for the hosts on 72 minutes when he headed home a Luke Benbow cross.

The win moves Stourbridge two points clear of Nantwich Town in second place but they are still ten points adrift of Blyth Spartans, despite the leaders losing a second consecutive game at Sutton Coldfield Town after their reverse at Spennymoor in midweek.

The relegation-threatened Royals looked like enduring a long afternoon as they trailed 2-0 to the leaders after goals from Luke Armstrong in the 11th and 21st minutes. But crucially, Matt Curley reduced the arrears eight minutes before half-time. Ryan Robbins then equalised just shy of the hour-mark before Michael Townsend won it for the Royals 18 minutes from time to leave them four points behind the safety-mark.

Third-placed Nantwich were held to a 1-1 draw by sixth-placed Grantham Town, who pulled level on points with fifth-placed Spennymoor Town, inactive due to the weather that cost four games.

Lee Shaw put the Gingerbreads ahead at the Weaver Stadium inside eight minutes. John Johnston equalised after 26 minutes but neither side were able to find a winner.

Buxton are two points behind the Dabbers in fourth after winning 1-0 at Kirkby Road against Barwell, courtesy of a goal five minutes from time from Bradley Grayson.

Warrington Town are now just a point adrift of the top five after winning 2-0 at the New Manor Ground against second-bottom Ilkeston FC, who are now 15 points from the safety-mark.

Ruben Jerome eventually put Warrington in front after 68 minutes and two minutes from time, Connor McCarthy made sure with a second.

Hednesford Town are not out of the play-off race yet either as Danny Glover`s goal three minutes from time at Westfield Lane put an end to Frickley Athletic`s four-game unbeaten run.

The Pitmen are now four points behind Spennymoor, while defeat leaves Frickley still only four points above the relegation places.

Marine AFC are two points above it after sharing a 0-0 draw at Owen Street against Coalville Town, while Corby Town moved two points closer to the Mariners in fourth-bottom spot after a 3-0 win at Steel Park against bottom-markers Skelmersdale United.

This was a must-win game for the Steelmen as 536 came to see the vital victory, thanks to a brace from youngster Jordan Crawford after 11 and 27 minutes and a third from defender Aaron Brown six minutes before half-time.
