Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Blyth Spartans hold a ten-point lead at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Premier Division table after Saturday`s round of matches, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Blyth were held to a 2-2 draw at Silverlands by fifth-placed Buxton and they had to come back from being 2-0 down after goals from recent permanent signing Liam Hardy after 18 minutes and Jamie Green eight minutes later.

A Daniel Maguire brace in the 44th and 66th minutes showed Spartans` battling spirit to come back and earn a point.

Stourbridge slipped to third spot after a crowd of 753 saw them held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at the War Memorial Ground by Mickleover Sports.

That allowed Nantwich Town to slip above the Glassboys into second on goal difference after winning 3-0 at the Weaver Stadium against Coalville Town.

John Johnston put the home side in front after 32 minutes and Sean Cooke added his 21st of the season from a free-kick four minutes before the break to put the Dabbers in control. They killed the game early in the 51st minute as Tom Peers picked up a bouncing ball in the box and slotted in a third.

Warrington Town moved into fourth place after a 2-1 Cantilever Park win over fourth-bottom Frickley Athletic.

The visiting Blues took a 25th minute lead through Gibraltar international Adam Priestley. But crucially, James McCartan equalised right on the stroke of half-time. Danny Hattersley popped up with the Wire`s winner two minutes from time.

Matlock Town moved level on points with Buxton in sixth after a 3-0 home win over Stafford Rangers.

A first-minute Michael Williams goal set the Gladiators up and Rhys Sharpe added a second just five minutes later. Dwayne Wiley put the home side three-up with only 20 minutes gone and that proved to be the end of the scoring.

Workington AFC, Spennymoor Town, Whitby Town and Grantham Town are still well in the top five hunt, although the latter pair were both held to draws.

The Reds won 2-0 at Keys Park against underachievers Hednesford Town with goals from Kyle May on the hour-mark and Nathan Waterston 15 minutes from time.

The Moors were 2-1 winners at The Grove against a Halesowen Town side who are now level on points with fourth-bottom Frickley.

But they led through Ben Clarke`s 16th minute effort before Joe Tait cancelled that out seven minutes later. Jamie Chandler won it for the north-east side 17 minutes from time.

Whitby were held to a 1-1 draw at the Turnbull Ground by mid-table Rushall Olympic, whose Craig Bannister levelled Dale Hopson`s 66th minute opener just five minutes later.

And the Gingerbreads were also held 1-1 at home by second-bottom Ilkeston FC.

Luke Shaw`s 21st minute opener for the hosts was cancelled out 20 minutes from time by Danny Gordon, although the Robins are still some 16 points adrift of the safety mark.

It was a disappointing afternoon for bottom side Skelmersdale United who are now needing urgent snookers to narrow a 20 point gap between them and safety after being hammered 5-0 at Stormy Corner by Barwell.

In-demand Brady Hickey gave his suitors more ammunition with a hat-trick in the eighth, 14th and 53rd minutes. Luke Barlone added a fourth after 63 minutes and Callum Ball a fifth five minutes later.

Corby Town pulled out of the drop zone with an emphatic 5-1 Steel Park victory over third-bottom Sutton Coldfield Town.

However, it was only emphatic after half-time as the Steelmen trailed to Matt Curley`s early sixth minute opener until youngster Joe Iaciofano equalised seven minutes after the break. The same player took the home side into the lead and sub Connor Kennedy added a third in the 81st minute.

There was still time for a fourth from another sub, the returning Spencer Weir-Daley after 86 minutes and a fifth from Aaron Brown in stoppage time.
