Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Blyth Spartans were crowned 2016-17 champions of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Premier Division on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The runaway leaders put the title beyond doubt with a 3-0 win over Halesowen Town on Saturday, with second-placed Spennymoor Town doing them an extra favour by losing at relegation-threatened Sutton Coldfield Town.

In front of a crowd of 1,167 at Croft Park, Luke Armstrong after 18 minutes, Sean Reid five minutes into the second half and Adam Wrightson seven minutes from time, scored the goals for Alun Armstrong’s side to kick-off the celebrations.

Meanwhile, Max Cartwright scored the only goal just past the hour-mark to seal Sutton Coldfield`s win at Coles Lane and lift them out of the bottom four.

Spennymoor are five points clear of sixth-placed Whitby Town though, despite the Seasiders sending Corby Town back into the drop zone after a 2-0 win at Steel Park.

Dale Hopson gave the visitors a 14th minute lead that Luke Bythway doubled in the 64th minute.

Nantwich Town, Stourbridge and Buxton occupy the remaining top five spots.

The Dabbers edged a five-goal encounter at the Weaver Stadium against mid-table Ashton United, taking a 2-0 lead with goals from Joe Mwasile after 17 minutes and a Dominic Smalley own goal before being pegged back with a goal from Ryan Crowther just before the hour-mark.

Steve Jones made it 3-1 in the last minute, although Josh Hancock`s own goal in stoppage time made for a nervy finale.

The Glassboys picked up a welcome three points from a nervy game at the New Manor Ground against a now relegated Ilkeston FC.

Goals from Ethan Jones in the sixth minute and Kennedy Digie just before the hour-mark were enough to secure the win after Anthony Dwyer had levelled towards the end of the first half from the penalty spot.

The Bucks were 2-1 winners against Coalville Town at Silverlands.

Joe McGee had the home side in front by the 26th minute. Dean Freeman equalised two minutes after the restart but Bradley Grayson`s spot-kick won it for Buxton 19 minutes from time.

Matlock Town, Warrington Town, Grantham Town and Workington AFC are all within four points of the top five, so can`t be discounted yet.

The Gladiators won 2-0 at Keys Park against a Hednesford Town side who can`t wait for this season to end! Niall McManus broke the deadlock just past the hour-mark and Marcus Dinanga wrapped up victory for Matlock two minutes from time.

Warrington lost ground though, going down to a 2-1 home defeat to Stafford Rangers, whose Jack Sherratt after 26 minutes and Ben Haseley 10 minutes after the break had them two-up before Scott Bakkor`s penalty reply for the Wire 12 minutes from time.

Grantham kept in touch after a 2-1 win at The Meres against Rushall Olympic.

Lee Shaw eventually gave the Gingerbreads a 58th minute lead that Stefan Galinski added to 12 minutes later. Brian Smikle netted an 87th minute consolation for the Pics.

Workington, with a game or two in hand on most above them, won 2-0 at Kirkby Road against Barwell with goals from Rob Wilson from the spot after 14 minutes and Jack Ryan five minutes later.

At the other end of the table, with Ilkeston joining Skelmersdale United in being relegated, it`s now two from Frickley Athletic, Corby, Sutton Coldfield and Marine AFC as to who joins them.

With Skem able to relax, they did Frickley no favours by beating them 3-1 at Stormy Corner with a brace from Steve Irwin, after 44 minutes from the spot and 84 minutes, and Nathan Randell in stoppage time after Jake Picton had given the Blues a 73rd minute reply.

The Mariners suffered a home defeat to Mickleover Sports by the same scoreline.

The hosts led through Anthony Davies` 57th minute effort but Lewis Belgrave after 65 minutes, Tyler Blake from the spot after 86 minutes and Adam Baskerville a minute later sealed Marine`s fate.
