Saturday's Premier Division final day review

By David Watters

The last play-off places in the EVO-STIK League Premier were up for grabs on the final day of the regular season on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

And wins for Grantham Town and Farsley Celtic were enough to stave off the challenge of Shaw Lane AFC, despite the Ducks also winning.

A Jordan Hempenstall brace after 20 and 50 minutes gave the Gingerbreads a 2-1 win at relegated Sutton Coldfield Town, whose Lee Smith replied after 67 minutes, to secure their play-off place. As a result, Grantham will travel to Warrington Town on Tuesday night in their semi-final.

Farsley Celtic secured their top five spot in their first season in the Evo-Stik Premier with a 3-0 victory over Marine AFC at Throstle Nest.

Goals from Nathan Cartman after 10 minutes, Luke Parkin a minute before half-time and Isaac Baldwin 13 minutes from time helped the Celts to a comfortable victory, and they'll now travel to Ashton United on Tuesday.

After the game, a delighted Adam Lakeland told the club`s official Pitchero website: “I’m delighted that we’ve won, there was a bit of pressure on us today, like there has over the past couple of months with other sides having well documented games in hand.

“Nobody’s given us a chance all season, but that suits us fine, we’ve shown over 46 games we’re a good team. To get 80 points in this league takes some doing, and as a newly promoted side we should be incredibly proud.”

Ashton finished as runners-up in the end after they won 2-1 at Borough Park against Workington AFC.

The Robins took advantage of Warrington`s defeat at Stourbridge by the same scoreline to leap-frog into second, coming back from being a 24th minute Scott Allison goal down to win, thanks to John Pritchard less than a minute later and then Liam Tomsett in the last minute of normal time.

At the War Memorial Ground, Joe Piggott is pictured celebrating giving Warrington a 14th minute lead that Leon Broadhurst levelled in the 43rd minute. Luke Benbow scored what proved to be the winner for the Glassboys right on the half-time whistle.

Shaw Lane missed out on the play-off spots after a really hectic schedule despite winning 2-1 at Sheerien Park against Matlock Town with goals from Spencer Harris in the 85th and 90th minutes after the Gladiators had led through Ted Cribley`s 67th minute effort.

Champions Altrincham cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win in their final match at Moss Lane against Hednesford Town.

In front of a bumper crowd of 1,856, the Robins took a third minute lead through Tom Hannigan but it wasn`t until the 51st minute that they managed to double their advantage with their 100th goal of the season from Jake Moult. And Josh Hancock netted the third goal in the first minute of added time to trigger the start of the celebrations.

Elsewhere, Steve Burr`s tenure as manager of Stalybridge Celtic ended with a sixth successive defeat – 2-0 at The Grove against second-bottom Halesowen Town, for whom Roland Agbor after 57 minutes and Ahmed Ali 10 minutes later sealed victory.

Stafford Rangers` saw off their management team of Neil Kitching and Nick Amos in much better fashion, winning 3-0 at the Weaver Stadium against Nantwich Town, courtesy of a brace of penalties converted by Rob Thompson-Brown after 16 and 51 minutes and Tyrell Waite four minutes later from open play.

Witton Albion finished seventh after a 2-0 Wincham Park win over Lancaster City with goals from Steven Tames after 48 and 81 minutes, while Rushall Olympic are eighth having won 5-2 at Owen Street against Coalville Town.

Dan Creaney gave the Ravens an eighth minute lead but Danny Jenno was given a straight red card for pulling down Danny Waldron as last man to leave the home side down to ten-men midway through the first half. Joe Hull equalised shortly afterwards and soon after the break, Gurjit Singh gave the Pics the lead.

Waldron from the spot three minutes later and Danny Dubidat on 63 minutes, stretched Rushall`s lead which Simeon May added to three minutes later, with Jake Woolley pulling a second back for the ten-men 12 minutes from time.

Callum Chippendale put Buxton in front at Whitby Town right on half-time but the returning Matty Tymon earned the Seasiders a point on the hour-mark.

Will Norcross for Mickleover Sports and Mitch Piggon for Barwell both bagged braces in a 3-3 Don Amott Stadium draw – boss John McGrath with Sports` other and Brady Hickey with a goal for the Canaries.
