Saturday's South Division action review

By David Watters

There looks to be no stopping Basford United in the EVO-STIK League South at present, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Martin Carruthers` side made it 18 games unbeaten to date and nine wins out of nine away from home after a 5-0 drubbing of bottom-markers Romulus at Coles Lane.

The Nottinghamshire side`s experienced former Alfreton Town, Mansfield Town and Grimsby Town striker Liam Hearn scored a hat-trick to take his league tally to 15.

Hearn scored in the 25th, 53rd from the penalty spot and 66th minutes, with Deon Meikle and Harry Wakefield adding the others in the final six minutes.

Basford pulled even further clear of the chasing pack as second-placed Alvechurch were held to a goalless draw at Lye Meadow by Newcastle Town.

Frickley Athletic were beaten 2-1 at Ashby Avenue by Lincoln United, whose Andy Toyne put them in front from the spot after 19 minutes.

Jacob Hazel looked as though he`d earned the Blues a point after he equalised in the 56th minute but Matt Cotton popped up with Lincoln's winner in the 88th minute.

Stocksbridge Park Steels slipped above Frickley into third after edging a seven-goal thriller at Bracken Moor against Loughborough Dynamo.

Steels had a great start with a first-minute Jack Poulton goal and Matt Reay doubled their advantage right on half-time. Ali Smith reduced the deficit nine minutes after the break but Scott Ruthven took Steels 3-1 ahead, only for Josh Riley to bag a brace in the 63rd and 71st minutes to restore parity. Brodie Litchfield then won it for the hosts a minute from time.

Corby Town are fifth after beating second-bottom Gresley FC 4-1 at The Moat.

And the Steelmen had to come back from a 19th minute Reece Morris goal down to win, courtesy of a hat-trick from young Jordon Crawford in the 40th, 65th and 66th minutes. Another youngster, Connor Kennedy, added the other on 49 minutes.

Elsewhere, Peterborough Sports halted a poor run of seven games without a win by beating another struggler, Market Drayton Town, 2-1 in Shropshire with goals from Lewis Hilliard and Josh Moreman in the last 20 minutes after Bradley Maslen-Jones had given Drayton a 32nd minute lead.

First half goals from Chris Baker, Jack Langston from the spot and Muzi Nduna gave Chasetown a cushion in a 3-1 home win over Bedworth United, whose only reply came from Ryan Smith two minutes from time.

Elsewhere, a third successive win for Belper Town moved them up to ninth.

The Nailers edged out Spalding United 2-1 at Christchurch Meadow, thanks to Kieran O`Connell after 37 minutes and Alex Steadman five minutes after the break – Jon Lockie replying 20 minutes from time.

Kidsgrove Athletic twice came from behind to share a 2-2 home draw with third-bottom Sheffield FC.

Tyler Williams` 22nd minute opener for Club was cancelled out by Anthony Malbon two minutes later and then James Gregory's 36th minute second for the visitors was levelled by Tom France in the 58th minute.
