Saturday's South Division action review

By David Watters

Well, it finally happened. Basford United's unbeaten 27-game start to the EVO-STIK League South season finally came to an end on Saturday as sixth-placed Stamford AFC won 3-1 at the Zeeco Stadium, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

There was a controversial start when Basford were reduced to ten-men after just 10 minutes when keeper Saul Deeney failed to claim a corner and James Reid handled the ball on the line and was dismissed. The resulting penalty was smashed home by Bradley Fortnam-Tomlinson.

Th ten-man battled hard and it wasn`t until 10 minutes from time that Ben George added a second for the Daniels. Despite the division’s top scorer Liam Hearn halving the deficit five minutes later, Liam Adams sealed a memorable win for Graham Drury’s side.

Basford`s lead is now 'only' 19 points after second-placed Frickley Athletic won 2-1 at falling Corby Town, for who this was a fifth successive defeat.

It was goalless at Steel Park until the hour-mark when Steve Leslie gave the Steelmen the lead. But a Gavin Allott double in the 80th and 87th minute sealed a fine win for the Blues.

Bedworth United are now third after they won 2-0 at the Oval against bottom-markers Gresley FC.

Veteran defender Mark Albrighton gave the Greenbacks the lead right on the stroke of half-time. Kai Williams ventually sealed the points with a second six minutes from time.

With Cleethorpes Town and Alvechurch having afternoons off due to waterlogged pitches, Chasetown moved to within a couple of points off the top six after winning 2-1 at Harrison Park against eighth-placed Leek Town.

Goals from Jack Langston after 38 minutes and Muzi Nduna five minutes after the break won it for the Scholars, despite Tim Grice`s 73rd minute reply.

The bottom three all lost again, with Romulus and Sheffield FC both joining Gresley in losing on Saturday.

The Roms lost 2-1 at Bracken Moor against Stocksbridge Park Steels, whose Brodie Litchfield won it in stoppage time after Jordan Francis had cancelled out Joe Lumsden`s 14th minute opener for Steels in the 54th minute.

Club lost 2-0 at the Lyme Valley Stadium against Newcastle Town, whose James Askey after 55 minutes and brother Luke five minutes later were on the mark.

Elsewhere, Carlton Town enjoyed a good 3-0 win at Loughborough Dynamo, courtesy of a brace from Ben Hutchinson in the 39th and 43rd minutes – the second from the spot – and then Jordan Wilson 12 minutes from time.

Kidsgrove Athletic also won away, 3-1 at Spalding United, whose James Tricks netted a consolation in stoppage time after Lee Cropper, Anthony Malbon and a Paul Walker own goal had been the Grove targetmen.

Peterborough Sports lifted themselves up to eighteenth in the table, albeit still only two points off bottom spot, after a comprehensive 4-0 home win over Belper Town.

Two goals in the opening eight minutes from Olly Medwynter and Mark Jones set Sports up, with a Lewis Hilliard penalty and Jordan Macleon adding the others in the final 20 minutes.
