Saturday's South Division action review

By David Watters

Just four games went ahead in the EVO-STIK League South on Saturday due to the overnight and early morning rain, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

There were no worries for leaders Basford United on their 3G pitch though as they moved an amazing 22 points clear of second-placed Alvechurch after a 4-1 win against fourth-bottom Market Drayton Town. The Nottinghamshire side can`t quite celebrate the title just yet but the champagne can definitely be put on ice!

They were shocked into action on Saturday after Joe Cuff gave Drayton an 11th minute lead. Liam Hearn equalised from the penalty spot in the 34th minute and went on to complete his hat-trick in the 74th and 78th minutes, with Harry Wakefield having made it 2-1 just after half-time.

Leek Town moved to within two points of the top six with a 1-0 Harrison Park win over fifth-placed Stamford AFC, Rob Stevenson`s 67th minute strike proving decisive.

Lincoln United are now eleventh after a 2-1 win at nearby Newcastle Town, thanks to a last-gasp Jack Wightwick effort after James Askey had cancelled out Matt Cotton's 13th minute opener for United in the 75th minute.

Spalding United won the day's only other game – 1-0 at Kidsgrove Athletic, courtesy of a 35th minute Danny Brooks effort.
